In an interview with the BBC\u2019s Mohamed Madi and Celestina Oludole, Gonsalves said having a British monarch as head of state is\u00a0\u201can absurdity\u201d\u00a0he would like to end in his lifetime.<\/p>\n

St Vincent and the Grenadines back in 2009 held a referendum to become a Republic, but it failed.<\/p>

On BBC Radio 4\u2019s The World at One Highlights, the Vincentian Prime Minister said\u00a0he does not know\u00a0if he is going to lead that particular process or is going to allow the next generation of leaders to do that.<\/p>

Gonsalves said: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is something I am hoping to see consummated\u2026 the severing of the umbilical cord between our country and the British Monarchy. King Charles knows that\u2026 and he and I have discussed that in very amicable ways.<\/p>

Gonsalves was further questioned about how\u00a0King Charles III reacted when the issue was brought up.<\/p>\n

The prime minister said: \u201cI would say the King is understanding of the impulses of former colonial peoples to cut the links.\u201d<\/p>
