A Vermont elementary school says it will no longer use the words \u201cmale\u201d or \u201cfemale\u201d when teaching fifth-grade students about puberty and human reproductive systems.<\/p>

Families of students at Founders Memorial School received a letter on April 20 informing them of the changes to the science and health curriculum.<\/p>\n

The changes reflect the district\u2019s desire to use \u201cgender inclusive language,\u201d Principal Sara Jablonski\u00a0wrote in the letter.<\/a><\/p>

\u201cIn an effort to align our curriculum with our equity policy, teachers will be using gender inclusive language throughout this unit. With any differences, we strive to use \u2018person-first\u2019 language as best practice,\u201d Jablonski wrote.<\/p>

Instead of referring to a person as a \u201cboy\u201d or \u201cmale,\u201d teachers will say \u201cperson who produces sperm.\u201d Likewise, they will no longer say \u201cgirl\u201d or \u201cfemale\u201d but \u201cperson who produces eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Essex Westford School District noted in the letter that teachers were working on editing worksheets to reflect the new changes.<\/p>

While teaching students about the human body, the district said it will focus on \u201cthe physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty and briefly introduce the basic structure and function of human reproductive systems.\u201d<\/p>\n
