The UPP enjoys the distinction of being the\u00a0only<\/em>\u00a0political party to have survived against the monolithic Antigua Labour Party (ALP) \u2013 and gone on to take and hold the reins of Government for 10 successive years.<\/p>\n

Formed in 1993 out of an amalgamation of three political parties \u2013 the PLM, the UNDP, and the ACLM \u2013 the UPP first contested General Elections in 1994, and, a decade later, came to office in a convincing defeat of the ALP, led by Lester Bird.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It ushered in a period of good governance and transparency described as \u201cGovernment in the Sunshine,\u201d and it ushered in several programmes that supported its \u201cPeople First\u201d mantra; innovative solutions to age-old problems; and legislation that held politicians accountable to the people.<\/p>\n

Starting today, Wednesday, April 26, the Party will trace its 30-year journey to the present, highlighting its many achievements; paying tribute to those who built and continue to build the institution; and celebrating the light it brought into thousands and thousands of lives.<\/p>

Today, on\u00a0Progressive 107.3 FM<\/em>, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, several members will look back at the early years \u2013 the founders, the influencers, and the officers of the Party; pay tribute to those who have gone on to glory, including\u00a0Sir George Walter<\/strong>;\u00a0Dr. Ivor Heath<\/strong>;\u00a0Leonard \u201cTim\u201d Hector<\/strong>;\u00a0Charlesworth Samuel<\/strong>; and\u00a0Frankie Nunes<\/strong>; discuss the roles played by the\u00a0Youth Arm<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Women\u2019s League<\/strong>; recall pickets, protests and marches; analyze the political and social forces that propelled the UPP in 2004; and examine the contributions of\u00a0Observer Radio<\/em>,\u00a0Crusader Radio,\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0Church<\/em>\u00a0in the political fight.<\/p>\n

This discussion will feature\u00a0Gatesworth James<\/strong>;\u00a0Gregory Walter,<\/strong>\u00a0Senior<\/strong>; and\u00a0Alister Thomas<\/strong>, and will be hosted by\u00a0Dame D.Gisele Isaac.<\/strong><\/p>

Later today, Wednesday, at 12:30 p.m., on\u00a0Observer Radio<\/em>, Founding Member and former Minister of Agriculture\u00a0Hilson \u201cBrother B\u201d Baptiste<\/strong>\u00a0and Senate Minority Leader\u00a0Shawn Nicholas<\/strong>\u00a0will join the hosts of\u00a0Voice of the People,\u00a0<\/em>Paul Quinn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Franz deFreitas<\/strong>, to continue the review of the UPP\u2019s three decades.<\/p>

They will identify the factors supporting the Party\u2019s longevity and the significance of its years in a democratic society. \u00a0They will also look at the changing face of politics \u2013 the players, the social issues, and the political values, from 2004 to present, and examine the emergence of both women and youth in the Party.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow, Thursday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on\u00a0Progressive FM<\/em>, Dame Gisele will be joined by Founding Member and former Deputy Political Leader\u00a0Willmoth Daniel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Their discussion of women\u2019s contributions to the UPP will celebrate the election of\u00a0Dr. Jacqui Quinn<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the first female to sit in the House of Representatives \u2013 and the elevation of a number of women to positions of power and influence.<\/p>\n

These include former Governor-General\u00a0Dame Louise Lake-Tack<\/strong>; former Senate President\u00a0Dame Hazlyn Mason<\/strong>\u2013Francis<\/strong>; former Police Commissioner\u00a0Delano Christopher<\/strong>; former Ambassador\u00a0Joan Underwood<\/strong>, and former House Speaker Isaac, among others.<\/p>\n

The changing faces and roles of the\u00a0Women\u2019s Forum<\/strong>\u00a0and the innovations that women have championed and refined will also be reviewed by Executive Members\u00a0Patricia Tully<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0J.Valerie Hodge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Later that day, from 2 to 3 p.m. on\u00a0Observer Radio<\/em>, Dave Lester Payne will sit down with Spencer and Leon Chaku Symister to discuss the Party\u2019s impressive legacy and People-First achievements in 10 years.<\/p>\n

They will look at the social programmes the UPP introduced, including the famous School Meals and School Uniform Grant; the Cuban Eye Care programme; the Dollar Barrel; and the Zero-rated Basket of Goods \u2013 as well as the minimum salary increases of 17% for public servants.<\/p>\n

Other innovations, including the Homecoming Festival, which fostered greater involvement by the Diaspora; the Independence Banquet; and the passing of the\u00a0Barbuda Land Act<\/em>\u00a0will be touched upon.<\/p>\n

The UPP\u2019s improvements and additions to the infrastructure will be enumerated: the construction of the Parliament Building; the Sir Vivian Richard Cricket Ground & Stadium; the new airport terminal; the Five Islands Secondary School; the Fisheries Complexes \u2026<\/p>\n

The completion of the Mount St. John Medical Centre and the National Public Library\u2026<\/p>\n

The planning and introduction of the new Treasury Building; the ADOMS Building; the Knuckleblock Community Centre\u2026<\/p>\n

The conversion of Swetes and Glanvilles Primary Schools into secondary institutions\u2026<\/p>\n

And the highway-lighting project; the refurbishing of miles of road in Antigua and the paving of roads on Barbuda; as well as the beautification and regular cleaning of St. John\u2019s City.<\/p>\n

Finally, on Friday, April 28, on\u00a0Observer AM<\/em>, between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m., UPP Public Relations Officer\u00a0Damani Tabor<\/strong>\u00a0will catalogue the Gaston Browne Administration\u2019s dismal failures in the first 100 days of its new term, branded\u00a0100 Days of Darkness and Decline.<\/em><\/p>\n

In contrast, from 9 p.m. to midnight, the Party will recognize its\u00a0100 Days of Light,<\/em>\u00a0symbolized by its six Members of the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0UPP MPs<\/strong>\u00a0and other\u00a0Members of the Redeem Team<\/strong>\u00a0will spend those three hours in\u00a0The Snake Pit<\/em>\u00a0with deFreitas, reviewing their post-election experiences and constituency concerns and bringing greater light to bear on the Administration\u2019s mishandling of the country.<\/p>\n

This discussion will be carried forward into\u00a0The Snake Pit<\/em>\u00a0on Saturday, April 29, starting at 3 p.m. \u00a0During that session, any additional activities leading up to the Labour Day Ceremonies and March with the\u00a0Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union<\/strong>\u00a0will be announced.<\/p>\n

Everyone is invited and encouraged to tune in to the various radio programmes and support the on-the-ground activities.<\/p>\n

The celebration of \u201c30 Years and UPPwards\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0100 Days of Light\u00a0<\/strong>culminates on Monday afternoon, May 1, at Ffryes Beach.<\/p>\n

But, in the meantime, the UPP is inviting members and supporters to post photos, videos and mementoes of Party figures, events, and activities on their\u00a0Facebook<\/strong>\u00a0pages and link them to the\u00a0MYUPP\u00a0<\/strong>page with the hashtag\u00a0#ThrowbackThirty.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
