The Antigua and Barbuda government is exploring alternative arrangements to acquire the Eastern Caribbean Cancer Centre located next to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.<\/p>

The centre is set to close at the end of the month, and the government is keen to ensure that cancer patients from the country and neighboring islands can continue to receive treatment.<\/p>\n

However, the principal owner of the facility, Dr. Conville Browne, is seeking US$15 million, which the government considers excessive and cannot afford.<\/p>

Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, Lionel Max Hurst, stated that the government is seeking a reasonable cost for the acquisition and is exploring other options in the meantime.<\/p>

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph has informed the cabinet of arrangements to ensure that cancer patients undergoing treatment at the centre will receive continued care after its closure.<\/p>\n

The government will cover the cost for patients to travel outside of Antigua and Barbuda for specialized care if necessary.<\/p>
