SUMMER GOODWIN WINS THE ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK 2023 HARPERS SCHOOL ARTS COMPETITION<\/strong><\/p>

St. John\u2019s, Antigua, April 19, 2023: Summer Goodwin, an art student at Christ the King Secondary School (CKHS) has once again won top prize at the Antigua Sailing Week Harper\u2019s School Art Competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The judges determined that Goodwin\u2019s bold image depicting the coral reef being protected by a sea goddess\/mermaid best captured this year\u2019s theme of \u2018Society, Coral Reefs, the Sea and You.\u2019 Goodwin also won in the 13-18 age category.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Art students from CKHS\u00a0swept the board in the 9 \u2013 13 and 14 \u2013 18 age categories with Island Academy (IA) taking the top three spots in the 5 \u2013 8 age category.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt is always a joy to receive these entries and watch the judges try to select the winners from the dozens of entries sent in by dedicated art teachers and their very talented students,\u201d said Cassandra Ryan, ASW coordinator.<\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Choice Award was won by Paris Turner, also of CKHS. Goodwin\u2019s painting will be the official welcome poster at the Cobbs Cross\u00a0junction in St Paul\u2019s.<\/p>

Roy Bento of Harper\u2019s Office Depot Inc. is delighted with the continued popularity of this competition: \u201cThis is one event that we have enjoyed supporting as it showcases the artistic talent of young people. Year after year we are very impressed with the level of entries received and the passion the young people show for preserving the beauty of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The public will have two opportunities to see the winning entries as they will be revealed and displayed during the Antigua and Barbuda Art Week exhibition at the National Sailing Academy (NSA) from Wednesday, April 20 alongside the work of renowned photographer, Edwin<\/span>\u00a0Gifford. Free entry to the public with cash raised from the sale of refreshments going towards the NSA Sailing Programme.<\/p>\n

The winning entries will then be displayed at the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel from Wednesday 3rd May until the start of Dockyard Day\u00a0festivities\u00a0on Saturday, May 06, 2023. Where\u00a0Goodwin and the group winners will receive their certificate and prizes.<\/p>\n

This was the 54th annual school art competition, which started in 1968 to build awareness of the event within a younger non-sailing demographic and encourage students to get creative.<\/p>\n
