Minister of Health\u00a0Molwyn Joseph today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cuba for the use of Herbeprot-P in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Herbeprot-P is a drug developed in 2007 in Cuba for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetes is one of the chronic non-communicable diseases seen in Antigua and Barbuda and diabetic foot ulcer is a commonly diagnosed complication of diabetes. Left untreated,\u00a0 diabetic foot ulcers can lead to lower limb amputations.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the implementation of the Herbeprot-P program in Antigua and Barbuda will lead to a reduction in the number of diabetic foot ulcers and lower limb amputations and ultimately a better quality of life for diabetics and their families.<\/p>

This, along with the provision of scholarships to Antigua and Barbudan medical students has increased the cadre of doctors and other healthcare providers in our twin island state.\u00a0 Both Ministers also furthered discussions on the establishment of a Medical School in Antigua and Barbuda which began when Minister Joseph visited Cuba in November 2015 and continued when President Raoul Castro visited Antigua last year.<\/p>
