Atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0is now 50% higher than pre-industrial levels. 2022 was the 11th consecutive year CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0increased by more than 2 ppm, the highest sustained rate of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0increases in the 65 years since monitoring began. The 2022 methane increase was 14.0 ppb, the fourth-largest annual increase recorded since NOAA\u2019s systematic measurements began in 1983, and follows record growth in 2020 and 2021. The two years of highest growth occurred in 2020 and 2021. Every spring, NOAA calculates and releases the preliminary global average levels of the three primary long-lived greenhouse gases \u2014 CO<sub>2<\/sub>, methane and nitrous oxide \u2014 observed during the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Measurements are obtained from air samples collected from sites in NOAA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gml.noaa.gov\/ccgg\/about.html\">Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network<\/a>, which includes more than 50 cooperative sampling sites around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our latest measurements confirm that the most important greenhouse gases continue to increase rapidly in the atmosphere,\u201d said Stephen Montzka, NOAA\u2019s Global Monitoring Laboratory senior scientist. \u201cIt&#8217;s a clear sign that much more effort will be required if we hope to stabilize levels of these gases in the next few decades.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon dioxide emissions remain the biggest problem\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gml.noaa.gov\/aggi\/aggi.fig3.png\">by far the most important contributor<\/a>\u00a0to climate change. The main driver of increasing atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0is the burning of fossil fuels, with emissions increasing from 10.9 billion tons per year in the 1960s \u2014 which is when the measurements at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gml.noaa.gov\/obop\/mlo\/\">Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii<\/a>\u00a0began \u2014 to about 36.6 billion tons per year in 2022, according to the\u00a0<a class=\" ext-link-after\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcarbonproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Carbon Project<span class=\"visually-hidden\">offsite link<\/span><\/a>, which uses NOAA\u2019s greenhouse gas measurements in its estimates.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in the atmosphere today is comparable to where it was around 4.3 million years ago during the mid-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.giss.nasa.gov\/research\/features\/199704_pliocene\/page2.html\">Pliocene epoch<\/a>, when sea level was about 75 feet higher than today, the average temperature was 7 degrees Fahrenheit higher than in pre-industrial times and\u00a0<a class=\" ext-link-after\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.umass.edu\/climate\/papers2\/BrighamGrette_Science2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies indicate\u00a0<span class=\"visually-hidden\">offsite link<\/span><\/a>large forests occupied areas of the Arctic that are now tundra.<\/p>\n<p>About a quarter of the CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions from fossil fuels to date have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanacidification.noaa.gov\/sites\/oap-redesign\/Publications\/OceanCarbonBudget_2022_essd-14-4811-2022.pdf?ver=2023-03-27-201148-863\">absorbed by the world ocean,<\/a>\u00a0contributing to ocean acidification, which may threaten some fisheries and aquaculture around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cause of methane increases not fully known\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOAA&#8217;s long-term measurements show that atmospheric methane increased rapidly during the 1980s, nearly stabilized in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, then resumed a rapid rise in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\" ext-link-after\" href=\"https:\/\/acp.copernicus.org\/articles\/22\/15351\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2022 study by NOAA and NASA scientists<span class=\"visually-hidden\">offsite link<\/span><\/a>\u00a0suggests that as much as 85% of the increase from 2006 to 2016 was due to increased microbial emissions generated by livestock, agriculture, human and agricultural waste, wetlands and other aquatic sources. The rest of the increase was attributed to increased fossil fuel emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The exact causes of the recent increase in methane are not yet fully known, said GML carbon cycle scientist Lindsay Lan, a\u00a0<a class=\" ext-link-after\" href=\"https:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/cires.colorado.edu\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1680871394514000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2M84U2ObZuToFH3cCR1i5z\">CIRES<span class=\"visually-hidden\">offsite link<\/span><\/a>\u00a0scientist working at the Global Monitoring Laboratory. One possibility, she said, is the influence of a persistent three-year La Nina, which, on average, results in enhanced precipitation over tropical wetland regions, which may increase the activity of microbes that generate methane emissions as a result.
