The Week That Was & What A Week It Was –<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The Story Of The Continued Exploitation Of The\u00a0 West Africans\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week, most of us woke up to the news that a boat moving passengers from Antigua to the USVI had\u00a0capsized and a number\u00a0of its passengers were missing.\u00a0 Speculation was rife\u00a0 about the identity of the passengers but soon confirmation came that the majority of the passengers on that ill-fated boat were Cameroonians.\u00a0 The early reports confirmed that of the 32 passengers in the boat\u00a0 13 were unaccounted\u00a0for.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The circumstances\u00a0which\u00a0brought these “tourists” to Antigua are still being actively\u00a0 debated in Antigua\u00a0& Barbuda and elsewhere today.\u00a0 After a grand fanfare and ceremony at V.C. Bird International Airport at which the country’s Tourism Minister, Foreign Minister and other key Tourism stakeholders\u00a0presided, their entry into this paradise isle was nothing short of dramatic.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Then there were scenes of these “tourists” roaming the streets in St.John’ s and elsewhere, unable to\u00a0 afford to pay for local accommodation\u00a0unlike\u00a0 what one would expect\u00a0of the ordinary “tourist.”\u00a0 It became apparent that\u00a0these “tourists” were duped, transported and dumped at our doorsteps\u00a0 and we were totally lost in the process as to exactly what was going on.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Then greater\u00a0trouble surfaced.\u00a0 when the “bridge” that was extended from West Africa to Antigua collapsed\u00a0 and Antigua was saddled with hundreds of West Africans immigrants and not knowing what to do with them.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

There can be nothing in this world worse than desperation\u00a0plus ignorance,\u00a0 especially when you are seemingly hopeless and in despair.\u00a0 \u00a0Any opportunity however ridiculous,\u00a0 would sound appealing..\u00a0 And no doubt, some opportunistic\u00a0 persons on that side of the Atlantic, saw an opportunity to make huge sums of money and that they did.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Government and ordinary citizens here were duped into believing that our guests were bonafide tourists looking to expand trade and other opportunities between Africa and the Caribbean.\u00a0 \u00a0 Lack of geographical\u00a0knowledge\u00a0 and awareness of exactly where they were heading, and an urgent desire to get to the United States to begin a new life might have caused these West Africans to dash at this opportunity to come to ANTIGUA, perhaps confusing ANTIGUA with a\u00a0 City in Guatemala by the same name..\u00a0 Having never before heard of our little island paradise, they thought that they were being taken to ANTIGUA in GUATEMALA, from where they could join one of the many caravans there and cross the border and into the United States.\u00a0 They were all shocked\u00a0to learn\u00a0 that the country they landed in was not ANTIGUA in GUATEMALA. And even after the appeasement by the government in offering them migrant status to allow them to remain in Antigua, the realities of life and economic deprivation soon became apparent to them in Antigua.\u00a0 The huge excitement of their trip across\u00a0the Atlantic and the thousands of dollars that they paid in ticket fares and other incidentals,\u00a0 had all suddenly come to naught.\u00a0 They all felt cheated and taken for granted in their\u00a0homeland.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yet they were undaunted and\u00a0 not prepared to give up on their quest to reach the United States.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0They were too far away now\u00a0to turn back.\u00a0 So with the help of unscrupulous actors locally and regionally, they were still prepared to risk all and do whatever it takes to get to the United States.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that is the genesis of these dangerous voyages in small and overcrowded\u00a0crafts. Local and regional boating\u00a0people, aware of their plight,\u00a0 were\u00a0ready to\u00a0\u00a0step\u00a0 in to fill the need.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am not certain if this major tragedy would end these attempts as the remaining\u00a0 West Africans are all still adamant to get to the United States at any cost.\u00a0 By the look of things, the exploitation\u00a0would continue.<\/p>\n
