Once fertilized with sperm and implanted into a mouse uterus, the eggs generated live offspring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_53B22FFB-55DE-12FF-D269-0465DDED1CE1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cThis study is particularly neat because it takes advantage of errors that are known to occur during culture of XY cells, which lead to loss of the Y chromosome and subsequent gain of a second X chromosome, resulting in XX cells that are capable of generating live offspring,\u201d said Rod Mitchell, a professor of developmental endocrinology at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, in a statement. He wasn\u2019t involved in the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_F83D99E3-F01E-3A64-141A-049A243A844F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cHowever, its potential application for humans (e.g. for same-sex couples) remains to be seen. In the mouse study, very few of the embryos generated using mouse cells resulted in live offspring and the final steps required to convert germ cells into eggs have not been reliably reproduced using human cells,\u201d added Mitchell, who is also a consultant pediatric endocrinologist at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_17C41A62-AA62-0AA9-6BCA-049A26E9A004@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Only 7 out of 630 implanted mouse embryos gave rise to mouse pups. Hayashi said this low success rate \u2014 around 1% \u2014 wasn\u2019t down to the process of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>sex chromosome conversion but the reality that cells cultured in a lab are typically inferior to those in a living animal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_CC1188A3-58AB-5FF1-D65C-FF3DF3065D8D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cThis is due to the suboptimal condition of the culture system.
