Election\u00a0 \u00a0Is Over – The People Won Bigtime<\/p>

What an election!\u00a0 Marked by low turnout\u00a0but clearly was a referendum on the ruling ABLP.\u00a0 And though the ABLP\u00a0 retained government by the slimmest of majority, they suffered major casualties, some of which were unexpected.\u00a0 Some of the results\u00a0were so close that this contest could have gone either way..<\/p>\n

We now\u00a0have to get\u00a0back to some semblance\u00a0of normalcy in\u00a0the interest of Antigua and Barbuda. There is much work to be done and it is now that the hard work begins.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

With a very slim majority and more opposition in parliament, governing is not going to be the same for the ABLP.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

For the first time in a long while we are poised\u00a0 to\u00a0 see some robust debates in parliament with more effort made to seek bipartisanship in the passage of legislation.\u00a0 .<\/p>\n

The makeup of\u00a0parliament augurs well for the country and it is a big plus for the citizens.\u00a0 I think that most people are now looking forward to a more effective and robust\u00a0opposition with the election of some new firepower.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

An effective Opposition is in everybody\u2019s interest, Including the Government. Lack of an effective opposition might have been responsible\u00a0 for where we are today.<\/p>\n

Our political system is based on open debate and political competition, where ideas meet, clash and are accepted, or rejected, by majorities of citizens.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The best ideas come from this confrontation, and so if there is no competition for power, the result is lose-lose for everyone.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

With no competition, citizens find that their voice is not heard and therefore retreat from politics\u2014an\u00a0 action that is deadly for democracy.\u00a0 \u00a0We might\u00a0have\u00a0 witnessed\u00a0 much of this in the past..<\/p>\n

Having a smart, competitive opposition is not only good for the opposition but it also pushes the government to do better, re-think its action and deliver to the citizens to keep its competitive edge and win the next elections.<\/p>\n

Parliamentary democracy is based on the party system of government. It is a government by criticism and exposition and therefore, it has to be governed by two political parties \u2013 a party\u00a0 in power and a party in Opposition.<\/p>\n
