POINTE XPRESS: The final voters\u2019 list \u2013 the Register for Elections 2023 \u2013 will be published by the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission today.<\/p>

The Antigua Barbuda Electoral Commission\u2019s (ABEC) spokesman, Ian Hughes, said the commission has spent several weeks finalising the list, according to law.<\/p>\n

One critical element is the removal of deceased people from the list.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Register for Elections is the list upon which the 2023 general elections will be conducted on 18th January.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It is estimated that just over sixty thousand people will be eligible to vote in the elections, however, the final figure was not available up to press time on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The constituency with the largest number of registered voters is now St. George, followed by St. John\u2019s Rural West, St. Mary\u2019s North and St. John\u2019s Rural East.<\/p>

ABEC, meanwhile, has now completed the majority of its preparations for election day.<\/p>\n

The lone outstanding matter is the selection of the election day workers who will man polling stations in each of the seventeen constituencies.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Hughes said the smaller constituencies have mostly completed the selection of their workers, however, several of the larger ones are still finalising the selection process.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Once this is done, approximately seven hundred poll day workers will be sworn in on Monday.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, ABEC has rejected a United Progressive Party claim that its timetable for publishing the Register for Elections was wrong.<\/p>\n

Through its legal counsel, Patricia Simon-Forde, ABEC noted that the law stipulates that the calculation of when the Register for Elections should be published begins when the Writ of Elections is issued.<\/p>\n

This calculation excludes Sundays and public holidays.<\/p>\n

Based on this, Simon-Forde noted that the Commission takes the position that its calculation for the publication of the Register for Elections is correct.<\/p>\n

With the list expected to be published today, Hughes said ABEC will no longer accept requests for constituency transfers, however, persons requesting replacement cards may still do so, even on the day of elections next Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Members of the disabled community who are unable to access ABEC\u2019s main office are invited to visit the Registration Unit opposite the John E. St. Luce Finance Centre or call ahead to the head office so that special accommodation can be made for them when they arrive.<\/p>\n
