2023 is an important <\/span>milestone year for The University of the West Indies (The UWI) as it marks 75 years since the official <\/span>opening of its first Campus in Mona, Jamaica. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Saturday, January 7, 2023 has been declared \u201cUWI Day\u201d, and <\/span>will be commemorated with a series of proclamations by some regional heads of state across the region, <\/span>signalling the start of UWI 75th anniversary celebrations under the theme: UWI at 75. Rooted. Ready. <\/span>Rising.<\/span><\/p>\n

The date holds special significance for The UWI. On January 7, 1947, the governing body of the University <\/span>College of the West Indies\u2014a branch of the University of London intended to serve British <\/span>colonies\u2014assembled for its first meeting in the House of the British Council in Jamaica.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

It was at this first <\/span>meeting that a decision was taken for lands at Mona, Jamaica to be used for establishing the first campus <\/span>of The University of the West Indies.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

One year later, on October 4, 1948, the Campus welcomed its first\u00a0<\/span>class of 33 medical students.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSeveral events and activities, managed with careful financial prudence, are being planned to <\/span>commemorate this 75 th jubilee milestone\u201d, said Dr. Maurice D. Smith, University Registrar and Chair, The <\/span>UWI 75 th Anniversary Planning Committee. <\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s a chance for alumni, faculty, staff, students, partners and <\/span>our wider community to celebrate their connections to our beloved UWI.<\/span><\/p>\n

We also welcome interested <\/span>corporate partners, through myriad opportunities available, to be part of the celebrations,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>

The UWI\u2019s 75 th anniversary year will feature initiatives purposely designed and aligned to reflect on its <\/span>past, confront the present, and articulate plans for its future across all five campuses as well as <\/span>internationally, through partner associations and affiliates.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The first event carded following UWI Day is an Interfaith Convocation Service at the University Chapel at <\/span>the Mona Campus on January 8. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Service will be broadcast live via the University\u2019s public information <\/span>platform, UWItv.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UWI community is invited to visit the anniversary website, www.uwi.edu\/75 for the anniversary <\/span>calendar which continues to be updated regularly, and also take the opportunity to share their UWI <\/span>memories and experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n
