Barbara Walters, the pioneering TV journalist whose interviewing skills made her one of the most prominent figures in broadcasting, has died, her spokesperson confirmed to CNN. She was 93.<\/p>

\u201cBarbara Walters<\/a>\u00a0passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones. She lived her life with no regrets.<\/p>\n

She was a trailblazer not only for female journalists but for all women,\u201d Walters\u2019 spokesperson Cindi Berger told CNN in a statement.<\/p>

Walters began her national broadcast career in 1961 as a reporter, writer and panel member for NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show before being promoted to co-hdst in 1974. In 1976, Walters joined ABC News as the first female anchor on an evening news program.<\/p>

At that network, Walters launched \u201cThe Barbara Walters Specials\u201d and \u201c10 Most Fascinating People\u201d before becoming a co-host and correspondent for ABC News\u2019 \u201c20\/20\u201d in 1984. Along the way, she interviewed every US president and first lady since Richard and Pat Nixon.<\/p>\n

For more than five decades, Walters was a name to reckon with, whether speaking with world leaders on news programs, in celebrities\u2019 homes for her regular \u201cBarbara Walters Specials\u201d or on \u201cThe View<\/a>,\u201d a daytime talk show in which a diverse panel of women discuss the latest headlines.<\/p>

Her shows, some of which she produced, were some of the highest-rated of their type and spawned a number of imitators. Indeed, \u201cThe View\u201d \u2013 which debuted in 1997 \u2013 paved the way for American talk shows \u201cThe Talk\u201d and \u201cThe Chew,\u201d as well as such entries as Britain\u2019s \u201cLoose Women\u201d and Norway\u2019s \u201cStudio5.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walters left \u201cThe View\u201d in 2014, but remained a part-time contributor to ABC News for two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew it was time,\u201d Walters told CNN\u2019s Chris Cuomo at the time. \u201cI like all the celebration, that\u2019s great, but in my heart, I thought, \u2018I want to walk away while I\u2019m still doing good work.\u2019 So I will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking upon the numerous women who had looked up to her throughout her career, Walters said they were her legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you say goodbye to something like 50 years in television?\u201d she said in conclusion. \u201cHow proud when I see all the young women who are making and reporting the news.<\/p>\n

If I did anything to help make that happen, that is my legacy. From the bottom of my heart, to all of you with whom I have worked and who have watched and been by my side, I can say: \u2018Thank you.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

Walters was married four times, to business executive Robert Katz, producer Lee Guber and twice to entertainment mogul Merv Adelson.<\/p>\n

The second marriage to Adelson ended in 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Jackie, whom she and Guber adopted in 1968.<\/p>\n

Walters\u2019 big \u2018get\u2019 interviews<\/p>\n

Walters was born September 25, 1929, in Boston. Her father, Lou, was a nightclub owner and theatrical impresario, and young Barbara grew up around celebrities \u2013 one reason she never appeared fazed by interviewing them.<\/p>\n

Walters earned her college degree from Sarah Lawrence College in 1953.<\/p>\n

Notoriously competitive, Walters was dogged in her pursuit of big \u201cget\u201d interviews, so much so that there were long-standing reports of rivalry between her and another of ABC\u2019s news stars, such as Diane Sawyer, who joined the network in 1989.<\/p>\n

That included, most recently, jockeying to land the first interview with Caitlyn Jenner, which Sawyer conducted in 2015.<\/p>\n

Walters, though, was no slacker in terms of landing major interviews, including presidents, world leaders and almost every imaginable celebrity, with a well-earned reputation for bringing her subjects to tears.<\/p>\n

Highlights included her 1999 interview with Monica Lewinsky \u2013 which was watched by an average of 48.5 million viewers \u2013 and a historic 1977 joint sit-down with Egypt\u2019s Anwar Sadat and Israel\u2019s Menachem Begin.<\/p>\n

Walter\u2019s first job on air was on NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show in the 1960s, where she reported what were then perceived as \u201cwomen\u2019s stories.\u201d In 1974, she was officially named co-anchor of the show.<\/p>\n

Two years later she became, for a time, the best-known person in television when she left \u201cToday\u201d to join ABC as the first woman to co-anchor a network evening newscast, signing for a then-startling $1 million a year.<\/p>\n

Though her term in that position was short-lived \u2013 co-anchor Harry Reasoner never warmed to her \u2013 she had the last laugh, staying at the network for almost four decades and co-hosting the magazine show \u201c20\/20\u201d (with her old \u201cToday\u201d colleague,\u00a0Hugh Downs<\/a>), \u201cThe View\u201d and countless specials.<\/p>\n

She was both mercilessly parodied \u2013 on the early \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d Gilda Radner mocked her as the sometimes mush-mouthed \u201cBabaWawa\u201d \u2013 and richly honored, with multiple Emmys, a Peabody and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n

Sometimes seen as brash, usually by men questioning her forthright demeanor, she could only shrug at the criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s a woman, it\u2019s caustic; if it\u2019s a man, it\u2019s authoritative.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a woman it\u2019s too pushy, if it\u2019s a man it\u2019s aggressive in the best sense of the word,\u201d she once observed.<\/p>\n
