Southwest Airlines\u2019 chief executive says that passengers\u00a0ought to prepare for even more cancellations<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday and Wednesday as thousands were left stranded at\u00a0airports over the storm-battered Christmas holiday weekend.<\/a><\/p>

\u201cWe had a tough day today,\u201d Southwest CEO\u00a0Bob Jordan told The Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn all likelihood we\u2019ll have another tough day [on Tuesday] as we work our way out of this.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThis is the largest scale event that I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d\u00a0Jordan said.<\/p>

The airline, the nation\u2019s fourth largest carrier based on number of passengers, canceled more than 70% of its flights on Monday and more than 60% on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Southwest warned that it would operate just over a third of its usual schedule in the days ahead to allow crews to get back to where they needed to be.<\/p>

\u201cObviously that will have even more impact on our Customers,\u201d Jordan told employees on Monday.<\/p>\n

Thousands of Southwest passengers have been left stranded at airports nationwide thanks to the extreme weather.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve got to get out of this. We\u2019ve got to get to the point where we\u2019re reliable and we get our Customers, our Crews, our aircraft, everything on track.\u201d<\/p>

The airline appears to have been hit harder by the weather than other carriers.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

American, United, Delta and JetBlue suffered cancellations rates of between zero and 2% by Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Of the approximately 2,950 flight cancellations in the US by midday on Tuesday, 2,549 were called off by Southwest. That represents more than 60% of its total flights for the day.<\/p>\n

Southwest\u2019s rate of cancellation drew the attention of the Biden administration, which called the rate of cancellations \u201cdisproportionate and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Department of Transportation has said it would investigate.<\/p>\n

Shares of Southwest fell by more than 6% as of Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern time.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Southwest flights were cancelled, stranding passengers for hours in Denver over the weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Executives at the Dallas-based carrier cited heavier-than-anticipated fog in San Diego, staffing shortages at its fuel vendor in Denver, and out-of-date technological systems throughout its network as reasons for the breakdown.<\/p>\n

Southwest said that frozen planes in storm-hit Denver and Chicago \u2014 two cities where it maintains a large presence \u2014 caused considerable delays as well.<\/p>\n

The airline said that affected passengers could \u201csubmit receipts for consideration\u201d by email or through the company website.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will honor reasonable requests for reimbursement for meals, hotel, and alternate transportation,\u201d the airline said.<\/p>\n
