St. John\u2019s, Antigua \u2013 16 December 2022 \u2013The Antigua and Barbuda Workers\u2019 Union is pleased to <\/span>announce that severance payments and other entitlements have been issued to the former employees <\/span>of Jolly Beach Corporation.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The payments come more than two years after the hotel property ceased operations. <\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, the <\/span>workers and the Union have been engaged in a protracted severance battle with the former owners, as <\/span>well as the Government, after it acquired interest in the hotel property.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, David Massiah, said the Jolly Beach <\/span>matter had been a priority for the Union and it was a pleasure to see the issue finally resolved. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s <\/span>all about workers\u2019 rights. It has nothing to do with politics; it has to do with the worker\u2019s satisfaction <\/span>and representation,\u201d Massiah stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Massiah added that while most persons were able to receive their severance, there were a few <\/span>individuals who were not properly accounted for during the reconciliation process. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This, he said, was <\/span>the result of poor cooperation between some of the parties involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere should have been more time to reconcile the issue on behalf of all those who did not receive <\/span>their monies…<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

There should have been better cooperation between the government, its receiver and <\/span>the hotel,\u201d Massiah explained.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The ABWU received the severance funds approximately two weeks ago, and along with its Attorneys <\/span>\u2013 Simon, Rogers, Murdoch, mounted a massive effort to process more than 400 payment documents <\/span>on behalf of the workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Union expresses its gratitude to Simon, Rogers, Murdoch for going above and beyond to <\/span>expedite the process. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Union also wishes to publicly recognize Deputy General Secretary, Chester <\/span>Hughes, for leading the charge and for his tenacious pursuit of the workers\u2019 severance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, many former staffers expressed delight and gratefulness upon receiving their cheques.<\/span><\/p>\n

One woman who spent 13 years at the institution said: \u201cI feel good, I\u2019m thankful, and I\u2019m grateful <\/span>and I appreciated it. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am going to go home and pray on it and bless it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another former employee of the dining room department commended the Union for its \u201cgood work\u201d <\/span>in agitating for the workers\u2019 severance.<\/span><\/p>\n

By Friday, December 16, the majority of former Jolly Beach employees were issued their severance payments and other entitlements.<\/p>\n
