The important and inseparable link between the water, energy and food sectors was a key message at the recent<\/span> Sensitization Talk on Renewable Energy in Agriculture, held on 28 November in commemoration of The Caribbean Community (CARICOM)\u2019s Energy Month. <\/span><\/p>

The event, hosted in collaboration with <\/span>\u2018 Addressing the Water-Energy Nexus in Agriculture\u2019<\/span> (WEF) sub-project of the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative <\/span>\u201cCooperation for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean\u201d<\/span>, <\/span>or Resilient <\/span><\/p>\n

Car<\/span>ibbean Initiative in short<\/span>,<\/span> and Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s <\/span>Ministry of Public Utili<\/span>ties, Civil Aviation and Energy <\/span>focused on raising awareness on sustainable energy through the theme <\/span>\u201cEnergy Consumption and encouraged Energy Saving Actions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

Funded by the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Nations (FAO) <\/span>in 14 CARICOM countries, <\/span>the Resilient Caribbean Initiative supports Small Island Developing States (SIDS) using an integrated Water-Energy-Food nexus approach in Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and Saint Kitts and Nevis. <\/span><\/p>\n

This approach is particularly useful for <\/span>SIDS<\/span> like Antigua and Barbuda as it seeks to build social, economic and climate resilience. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

As the<\/span> effects<\/span> of climate change<\/span> become more evident with sea levels rising and rainfall patterns changing, freshwater <\/span>availability<\/span> and <\/span>quality is decreasing <\/span>while the <\/span>frequency and severity of droughts increases. <\/span><\/p>\n

This, coupled with inefficiencies in the use of water, particularly affects agricultural production, which is in strong competition with other sectors for water resources.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

FAO National Project Coordinator for the WEF Sub-project and featured speaker, Mali Barnes emphasized the benefits of improving the efficiency of water resources to increase agricultural productivity, sharing how the <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

project is using technological innovations, such as solar-powered (micro) irrigation systems to improve water efficiency and management, and access to clean, climate-smart energy to increase <\/span>agricultural water productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sub-project is also supporting twenty farmers in Antigua and Barbuda with the provision of climate-smart technologies like those mentioned. <\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> talk provided an opportunity for participants, which included farmers, extension officers, representatives from the Department of the Environment and other key stakeholders to<\/span>learn about the usefulness of the<\/span><\/p>\n

Water-Energy-Food Nexus approach, which<\/span> highlights the interdependence and synergies between the water, energy, food security and natural resource sectors and its<\/span> practical applications for Antigua and Barbuda.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other speakers included Energy Officer at the Ministry <\/span>of Energy, <\/span>Ita<\/span> Jah Simmons, and<\/span> Owner of OWIA Solutions<\/span>,<\/span> and solar <\/span>p<\/span>hotovoltaics<\/span> installer, Daryl Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n

District Officer from the Extension Division<\/span> and participant<\/span>, <\/span>Victor Wade, <\/span>shared,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Considering the conditions Antigua and Barbuda is facing, being one of the driest countries in CARICOM and now coming out of a severe drought, the Water-Energy Nexus in Agriculture sub-project is very timely. <\/span><\/p>\n

This project combines innovations in climate smart technology to <\/span>promote water sustainability, food security <\/span>and<\/span> renewable energy in agriculture. <\/span><\/p>\n

These are all critical areas for resilience building, we are grateful for FAO\u2019s support through this project.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In promoting climate-resilience and awareness of climate-smart technologies in agriculture, the WEF sub-<\/span>project is commencing additional<\/span> capacity-building activities in early 2023, which will seek to <\/span><\/p>\n

train farmers and extension officers in the various concepts and practical approaches behind climate resilient and <\/span>sustainable<\/span> agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n
