The conversation around androgynous dress has developed significantly from back when Kurt Cobain was performing in a dress but, if we’re being honest, the skirt hasn’t quite made it into the category of “unisex” for much of society. Well, not yet.<\/p>\n

In late 2019, pre-pandemic,\u00a0we covered the rise of the man skirt<\/a>\u00a0and how, at the time, it was popping up on runway displays between Paris, New York, Milan, and beyond.<\/p>

Now, our wardrobes are doing their full butterfly transformation and becoming louder, more ostentatious, and decidedly less boring.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In what is something of a perfect storm for the affirmation of the skirt for men, some of\u00a0pop culture’s biggest names are wearing them, too.<\/p>\n

Most recently,\u00a0A$AP Rocky<\/a>\u00a0has been joining in the fun.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Pretty Flacko does not rest when it comes to proving his style supremacy; aside from perfecting his\u00a0dad \u2018fits<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0effortlessly\u00a0rocking a\u00a0furry wig<\/a>, Rocky\u2019s endless wardrobe boasts a few skirts.<\/p>\n

We’ve seen him\u00a0layer skirts over trousers<\/a>\u00a0and wear them on their own to show some leg, like with this\u00a0Givenchy one he was spotted in<\/a>\u00a0recently.<\/p>

The\u00a0leather skirt was seemingly paying homage to Ye’s famous stage wear for the Watch The Throne tour, one of\u00a0the most iconic men’s outfits in recent years.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

And Rocky isn’t the only one adding skirts into their rotation \u2013 Russell Westbrook bodied his\u00a0Thom Browne \u2018fit<\/a>\u00a0at NYFW last year, and\u00a0Brad Pitt<\/a>\u00a0recently wore a\u00a0brown linen skirt<\/a>\u00a0with a matching blazer at the Berlin screening of his new film\u00a0Bullet Train<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Google search data shows that searches for Brad Pitt went through the roof\u00a0as every major news outlet was publishing the story, while on social media images of the actor on the red carpet were everywhere on my feed.<\/p>\n

There’s no denying that some of this\u00a0attention\u00a0was because of how well he pulled off the look, but I suspect that the vast majority came from the novelty of seeing a man in a skirt.<\/p>\n

It’s nothing new, the\u00a0likes of Rick Owens,\u00a0Thom Browne<\/a>, COMME des GAR\u00c7ONS, and Maison Margiela have been including men’s skirts in runway collections for years and their un-gendered use stretches back centuries \u2014 not just in the form of the I’ll-only-wear-it-at-a-wedding kilt.<\/p>\n

Even so, dresses and skirts have never really stuck\u00a0their flag firmly in mainstream menswear.<\/p>\n

This renewed affirmation of skirts in menswear via popular culture might be the final push into mainstream consciousness that was needed.<\/p>\n

It goes much further than just A$AP Rocky and Brad Pitt.\u00a0Who could forget\u00a0the moment that Kid Cudi performed on\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0in a Virgil-designed floral dress<\/a>,\u00a0Oscar Isaac<\/a>\u00a0continuing his style accession with\u00a0skirt supremacy<\/a>, or\u00a0Jordan Clarkson wearing a full look from Highsnobiety’s exclusive\u00a0Thom Browne collection<\/a>, including a paneled mesh skirt.<\/p>\n

Plus, we are not only talking about long sweeping ankle-length skirts,\u00a0Highsnobiety cover star<\/a>\u00a0Bad Bunny has been giving some love to mini skirts, joined by the likes of J Balvin.<\/p>\n

These are big stages. And huge\u00a0statements\u00a0of advocacy for genderless dressing.<\/p>\n

Why it’s taken this long for the skirt to\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0enter the realm of menswear, I don’t know. And I sincerely hope what looks like a full acceptance of the category doesn’t once again fizzle out with a quiet yelp.<\/p>\n

People wearing whatever they want, whenever they want, means more styling options and less time trying to work out\u00a0another<\/em>\u00a0way to wear your Levi’s 501s.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, we hit the internet to round up some of the best skirts for men on the market right now.<\/p>\n

Our search, and the amount of them available in the collections of the world’s best brands, tell us that it’s going nowhere fast.<\/p>\n
