The Ministry of Education says it has taken the decision to re-introduced the system of custodians receiving half of their basic wages during the summer break commencing summer of 2018.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Ministry said this was done because it’s aims and objectives were not met as the schools were not properly prepared for the September school terms.\u00a0 It said that staff were paid full wages and should have been using the long break to ensure that students returned to a clean and healthy environment.<\/p>\n

“This proved to be unsuccessful after two (2) years of trying,” the ministry said in a memo seen by Antigua News Room.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Consequently,\u00a0 full wages will only be paid during the first week after the closure of school and resume two weeks prior to the opening of the new school term.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

50% of gross weekly wages will take effect from the week ending 6th\u00a0July to week ending 17th\u00a0August, 2018 for those custodians who chose to remain at home during the summer break.<\/p>\n

The risk allowance will not be paid during this period of half wages.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Custodians who have accumulated vacation leave are required to apply for their vacation leave during the summer.<\/p>\n

No approval will be given for vacation leave which falls during the first week after the closure of school and the last two weeks prior to the opening of school.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Arrangements will be made for those custodians without vacation leave to continue to perform their duties at their respective schools or during summer programs to be held in schools.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Custodians who want to continue to perform their duties during the ten (10) weeks of summer should indicate their intention to do so to their respective principals.<\/p>\n

Principals should submit this information to the ministry.<\/p>\n

Custodians who failed to report for duty will not be paid.<\/p>\n

The ministry also wishes to inform that a cohort of about fifty (50) to sixty (60) custodians will be chosen to take part in a training exercise during the first three days of Summer Institute from 20th\u00a0to 22nd\u00a0August 2018.<\/p>\n

Principals are asked to submit the names of those school custodians who are in urgent need of training to be part of the first cohort for training.\u00a0 This will be an ongoing training exercise so another group of custodians will be chosen for training in summer 2019.<\/p>\n
