The long awaited LIONFISH DERBY AND \u00a0FESTIVAL IS A WRAP.<\/p>

Four years of planning and \u00a0over in\u00a0 4 days!<\/p>\n

The event was a resounding success with 864 lioinfish being removed from the reefs!<\/p>

The bad news is this shows \u00a0Antigua and \u00a0Barbuda has a serious LIONFISH INVASION \u00a0in the reefs surrounding our islands and continued removal needs to be encouraged.<\/p>

The festival was held on Sunday afternoon in the historic \u00a0Nelsons Dockyard with an exciting afternoon of festivities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There was music provided by DJ NEX and LUCKY EDDY and food and\u00a0 a rose wine bar by Premier Beverages and plenty of other activities.<\/p>

There were educational lectures series on the marine environment, \u00a0a jewelry making class using LIONFISH FINS and booths selling \u00a0Lionfish items.<\/p>\n

A MERMAID COVE TENT featured a large aquarium with LIVE LIONFISH\u00a0 and a virtual LIONFISH hunting game \u201cLIONFISH PATROL\u201d.<\/div>\n

There were also 3 mermaids on hand to interact with the public.<\/div>\n

Esteemed Jewelry maker Miranda \u00a0Askie had a booth featuring her jewelry including \u00a0 LIONFISH Jewelry from \u00a0Kajexpressions.com<\/a> \u00a0from Belize.<\/div>\n

The \u00a0ELKHORN MARINE \u00a0CONSERVANCY \u00a0 (EMC) \u00a0and \u00a0GREEN FINS \u00a0had environmental booths on \u00a0show and the school children poster contest booth featured the posters of the winners.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The largest cash purse of any event in Antigua presented \u00a0$34,000 EC \u00a0cash prizes to the winners of the HUNT \u00a0 (the most lionfish, \u00a0the largest and smallest \u00a0Lionfish) \u00a0 and to the \u00a0 3 \u00a0winning \u00a0CHEFS \u00a0 \u00a0who took part in the \u00a0LIONFISH COOKOFF. \u00a0and served lionfish tasters to the public.<\/div>\n

In addition school children were awarded prizes in \u00a0 2 \u00a0age groups.<\/div>\n

It was action-packed fun-filled afternoon. The prize giving was the culmination of the day with the Honorable Minister Max Fernandez presenting the cash prizes.<\/div>\n

The whole event was documented and will be shown on a major network by prominent \u00a0 British Filmmaker \u00a0Dean Arnett whose participation was made possible by arrangements done by Her Excellency \u00a0Karen -Mae Hill, \u00a0Antiguas \u00a0UK High Commissioner with a \u00a0generous donation from Ms Ann Chapman.<\/div>\n

Organiser Martha Watkins Gilkes declared the event a \u00a0mega success and commented \u201cIt was meant to be a \u00a0one time event but we are hopeful that if we can find the funds and donations it may be an annual event as the LIONFISH \u00a0problem is an ongoing issue. \u00a0 I would like to \u00a0thank \u00a0the \u00a0MANY \u00a0 who helped out \u00a0in \u00a0so many \u00a0areas \u00a0to make it \u00a0a \u00a0success.\u201d<\/div>\n
