The Barbuda Council has reportedly told the\u00a0Public Works Department that it can no longer provide sand to make concrete for the improvement of the roads and sidewalks in Antigua.<\/p>

The government did not state the reason for this but has resorted to getting sand from neighbouring\u00a0Montserrat.<\/p>\n

“The Director reported that a barge-load of sand from Montserrat reputedly costs $200,000.”<\/p>

“Hence, government resources that ought to go to further the rebuilding and relief efforts on Barbuda may have to be diverted to purchasing sand from outside of the state,” according to Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst.<\/p>
