A 10.6 million Euros OECS Climate Change project is expected to help reduce the possibility of flooding in the community of Cashew Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n

The funds for this project, and several others in the nine member states of the OECS, will come from the iLAND Resilience\u00a0awareness\u00a0initiative which was recently launched in Grenada.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The project will provide \u201cDetailed analysis and engineering designs for alleviation of flooding (and related risks) at Cashew Hill<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Disaster officials have long warned that areas like Cashew Hill, despite its name, are flood prone areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the iLand resilience project Antigua & Barbuda will also benefit from the development of Climate Change and Environmental Management Policy and Strategy<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It is with this funding that the development of Environmental Regulations for the Environmental Protection & Management Act of 2015 will be drafted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acoording to the project there will also be the development of “best practices” recommendations for implementing the revised OECS Building Code<\/span>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Antigua & Barbuda will also receive technical assistance in the development of local area physical development plans<\/span> and to conduct of a Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) survey in the OECS.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The survey will Assess climate change Adaptation and sustainable sand Management and Implementation of Public Awareness and Project Visibility Activities<\/span>.<\/p>\n

iLand\u00a0Resilience is the\u00a0brand for the\u00a0OECS Commission\u2019s Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Land Management Project. <\/span><\/p>\n

The project is managed under the OECS Environmental Sustainability portfolio\u00a0and financed by the European Union’s\u00a0<\/span>Global Climate Change Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head of the OECS GCCA Project, Mr. Chamberlain Emmanuel, highlighted that through the iLAND Resilience initiative, OECS Member States can demonstrate their capacity to deal with the threats and opportunities that come with climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Several\u00a0interventions\u00a0are being\u00a0undertaken throughout the nine participating Member States to address key challenges faced due to the effects of climate change. Examples of these projects include coastal protection initiatives in the British Virgin Islands and in Nevis; and water security through rainwater harvesting in Grenada and Montserrat,”\u00a0Mr. Emmanuel said.<\/span><\/p>\n
