Prime Minister Gaston Browne says he wants former Attorney General of Antigua and Barbuda Justin Simon QC to chair the steering committee of the Caribbean Court of Justice ahead of a referendum here later this year.<\/p>

Browne told radio listeners over the weekend that he hasn’t spoken to Simon yet but noted that it is is government intention to make some changes to the coordinating committee.<\/p>\n

“I know he’s been a proponent for the court and I think he will be an excellent person to have to lead that initiative.”<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Simon served as AG under the former UPP administration but has been vocal in his support for the Trinidad based court to replace the Privy Council as Antigua and Barbuda’s final court of appeal.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin told a special sitting of the CCJ here earlier this month that within 120 days, this country will the referendum require by the constitution in hopes of making the CCJ the court of last resort.<\/p>\n

The opposition says it wants several issues on the referendum ballot but prime minister Gaston Browne has shut down that idea saying voters will have only one item to decide on.<\/p>
