In New York, the Guyana Independence Anniversary Celebration Committee said the Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana, Patricia Chase-Green will be grand marshal of the annual Guyanese Independence Parade in Brooklyn on June 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Committee said the parade is part of Guyana\u2019s Independence celebration in New York, which will be held from June 3 \u2013 10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Committee chairman, Rickford Burke, told the Caribbean Media Corporation that along with executive members, he has been meeting with New York officials and members of the New York Police Department (NYPD) in finalizing plans for the celebrations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGuyanese pride will be on full display when the New York Diaspora unites for one celebration.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He said the celebration will be held under the theme, \u201cCelebrate Guyana to the World.\u201d<\/p>

Nevlon Duguid, director of communications for the organizing group, said the annual event is the second largest West Indian celebration in New York, after the Labor Day Carnival parade.<\/p>\n

He said the historic 2016 jubilee celebration attracted over 20 000 Guyanese, while over 10 000 attended in 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInterest has peaked astronomically this year. We expect to mobilize a greater number of Guyanese in 2018,\u201d Duguid said.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Guyana marked Independence Day celebrations with President David Granger reminding nationals of the importance of providing greater protection to children.<\/p>\n
