music for crime is a \u201ccourse in obfuscation that leaves us with an anecdotal diagnosis of the problem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His views come against the background of an RJRGLEANER Group-commissioned poll showing that 41 per cent of respondents believe that dancehall music played a very big role in influencing criminal behaviour.<\/p><div id=\"antig-2713502641\" class=\"antig-content_4 dancehall music and the incidence of crime.<\/p><div id=\"antig-2819565689\" class=\"antig-content_2 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.com\/antigua\/\" aria-label=\"500X500 (1)\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:500\/h:500\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/500X500-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" Whap!<\/b>\u00a0in America and London, they are not going out there and doing any crime. Some of them don\u2019t even know what that\u00a0<b>Whap! Whap!<\/b>\u00a0means. They just like that part of the song,\u201d Edwards said.<\/p>\n<p>A concerned Prime Minister Andrew Holness has specifically cited\u00a0<b>Whap! Whap!<\/b>\u00a0as a song that has a negative impact on society.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards theorises that individuals are influenced by peer groups, family, and friends to carry out crime.<\/p>\n<p>The dancehall promoter said that many artistes using offensive lyrical content are not lawless.<\/p>\n<p>Elite sports personalities, lawyers, and other professionals who are fans of violence-laden songs listen in order to \u201cenergise themselves\u201d, Edwards said, suggesting that the imagery was figurative.<\/p>\n<p>Major-Campbell, who pastors Christ Church in Vineyard Town, St Andrew, said that crime is a far more complex problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are readily repulsed by news of violent crimes, we have not been honest about our poor conflict resolution skills, an ugly history with police brutality, gang violence, and the lagging united political will to address social ills and a challenged justice system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Reverend Peter Garth, pastor of Hope Gospel Assembly, however, believes that music can be a turbo-charged motivator, emboldening listeners to transform metaphor into reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersons drink, persons become intoxicated, and if you have a desire to do certain things, it will be deepened when you stand up and listen to lyrics that are asking you to retaliate and use guns and all of that.
