Prime minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,\u00a0Ralph Gonsalves<\/strong>, said: “We applaud your government and your people for conducting these elections. We congratulate you (Maduro) wholeheartedly on this re-election.<\/p>\n

“It is with joy that the government and the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines welcome the good news that the government and the people of the\u00a0Bolivarian Republic<\/strong>\u00a0of Venezuela held\u00a0presidential elections<\/strong>\u00a0on Sunday, May 20, 2018, which is consistent with the high standards required of the international community.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“We congratulate you whole-heartedly on your own re-election to the presidency of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”<\/p>

Gonsalves also voiced hopes the shared multi and bilateral agreements between Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela, such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELEC), will strengthen during Maduro’s upcoming term.<\/p>\n

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines ambassador to\u00a0Cuba<\/strong>,\u00a0Ellsworth John<\/strong>, headed the\u00a0Caribbean Electoral Observer Mission\u00a0<\/strong>to monitor Venezuela’s electoral process first-hand.<\/p>

Both Gonsalves and the\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong>\u00a0prime minister,\u00a0Gaston Browne<\/strong>, say they are looking forward to another six years of working with Maduro.<\/p>\n

Browne said: “I look forward to working with you and expanding our\u00a0cooperation\u00a0<\/strong>in projects related to development for the mutual benefit of both peoples.”\u00a0He concluded by saying Maduro’s re-election is a “victory for\u2026 national\u00a0sovereignty<\/strong>… a cornerstone of\u00a0international law<\/strong>.”<\/p>

At the other end of the spectrum, the\u00a0OAS\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0EU<\/strong>\u00a0confirmed their rejection of the results.<\/p>

The EU claims that the date of the May 20 general elections was\u00a0not agreed upon by all parties so didn’t comply\u00a0<\/strong>with “international standards for a credible process,” despite\u00a0opposition parties verbally agreeing to the date late last year.<\/p>\n

The EU is now considering “appropriate measures” in response to the election outcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
