NY TIMES: Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion who has been the face of tennis since winning her first U.S. Open in 1999, said in a magazine article published online on Tuesday that she planned to retire from the sport after playing again in the tournament, which begins later this month.<\/p>\n

Williams, who long ago transcended her sport as a dominant cultural figure,\u00a0said in an as-told-to cover story for Vogue<\/a>\u00a0that she has \u201cnever liked the word retirement,\u201d and preferred the word \u201cevolution\u201d to describe her next steps. \u201cI\u2019m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,\u201d including working with\u00a0her venture capital firm<\/a> and growing her family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
