The Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment <\/span><\/span>wishes to state that<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> contrary to social media posts, <\/span><\/span>there are no confirmed monkeypox cases in Antigua and Barbuda. The Ministry <\/span><\/span>is outraged that <\/span><\/span>any <\/span><\/span>person<\/span><\/span>would disseminate <\/span><\/span>false <\/span><\/span>information suggesting the presence of monkeypox in <\/span><\/span>the twin island state<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>This act <\/span><\/span>became<\/span><\/span> even more egregious when it was established that the perpetrator is a current employee of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre. <\/span><\/span>We strongly condemn any such act creating alarm and distress in the public<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

We would urge all members of the public to <\/span><\/span>be responsible at all times<\/span><\/span> in disseminating information and to desist from <\/span><\/span>circulating<\/span><\/span> false information that undermines our public health system<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All laboratory investigations for suspected <\/span><\/span>monkeypox <\/span><\/span>cases have been negative both at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre that commenced monkeypox testing <\/span><\/span>last week<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>We therefore <\/span><\/span>reiterate that <\/span><\/span>THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED CASES OF MONKEYPOX IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Please be assured that <\/span><\/span>if and <\/span><\/span>when<\/span><\/span> a monkeypox case is confirmed the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment will promptly report this information to the public. <\/span><\/span>This is consistent with the Ministry\u2019s commitment to transparency, particularly with regard to public health matters, as demonstrated in the past.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In the meantime, m<\/span><\/span>embers of the public are reminded that monkeypox is a viral disease characterized by a fever, enlarged lymph nodes and a rash. Monkeypox is spread from person to person by direct contact with the rash, bodily fluids (fluid, <\/span><\/span>pus<\/span><\/span> or blood from skin lesions), and scabs. Clothing, sheets, <\/span><\/span>towels<\/span><\/span> and other objects can also be a source of infection. The virus is also transmitted from pregnant a mother to her unborn child.<\/span><\/span> Physicians are reminded to report any suspected cases monkeypox to the MOHWE\u2019s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There is no specific treatment for monkeypox. However, the public is advised that social and physical distancing, frequent handwashing and wearing facemasks may prevent infection. Persons are therefore strongly advised to practice these public health and social measures to avoid becoming infected.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
