Conjoined twins born with fused brains have been successfully separated following a 27-hour surgery involving more than 100 medics corresponding via virtual-reality headsets in two different countries.<\/p>

The 3-year-old twins, Bernardo and Arthur Lima, underwent six smaller procedures to prepare for the marathon surgery, which took place in Rio de Janeiro under the direction of British doctor Noor ul Owase Jeelani.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a lot of tears and hugs,\u201d Dr. Jeelani told\u00a0PA Media<\/a>\u00a0after the operation was completed. \u201cIt was wonderful to be able to help them on this journey.\u201d<\/p>

Twins born with a conjoined cranium are incredibly rare, accounting for only 1 in 2.5 million live births, according to the\u00a0National Institutes of Health.<\/a>\u00a0Only 30% of those survive the first month of life.<\/p>

Therefore, surgeons performing separation procedures don\u2019t have a wealth of prior experience to draw upon, making the operations incredibly risky.<\/p>\n

In order to prepare for the procedure on the Lima twins, medics spent months using virtual reality projections to trial their surgical techniques \u2014 something that proved instrumental when it came time for the actual operation.<\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s really great to see the anatomy and do the surgery before you actually put the children at any risk,\u201d Dr. Jeelani explained. \u201cYou can imagine how reassuring that is for the surgeons.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the procedure, a team of surgeons was set up in a \u201cvirtual-reality room\u201d in London and liaised with surgeons in Rio who were wearing headsets and performing the actual operation.<\/p>

\u201cIn some ways, these operations are considered the hardest of our time, and to do it in virtual reality was just really man-on-Mars stuff,\u201d Dr. Jeelani explained.<\/p>

Dr. Jeelani was in Rio and only took four 15-minute breaks over the course of the 27-hour operation. He admitted he was \u201cshattered\u201d by the end of the surgery.<\/p>\n

But the payoff was well worth it, with the Lima family feeling \u201cover the moon\u201d after the boys were successfully separated.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the surgery, the twins were suffering from high blood pressure and dangerously high heart rates. Heartwarmingly, however, their stats returned to normal once they were reunited and were able to hold hands.<\/p>\n

The Lima twins now face six months of recovery before they\u2019ll be able to do the same activities that other toddlers can do.<\/p>\n

The miracle surgery is not the first involving conjoined twins to make headlines in recent years.<\/p>\n

Closer to home, Ballenie and Bellanie Camacho were\u00a0successfully separated at a hospital in Westchester, New York<\/a>\u00a0in 2017 after an epic operation that took 22 hours.<\/p>\n

The twins, who were joined at the back, are now 6-years old and said to be \u201cthriving.\u201d<\/p>\n
