The monkeypox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister, Gaston Browne has instructed the Ministry of Health to acquire vaccines for the highly contagious disease that has already infected thousands of people worldwide.<\/p>

\u201cWe have to prepare for its eventual arrival here. We have asked the health minister, the medical director, and the Chief Medical Officer at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center to do all that is necessary to acquire the vaccines as well as the anti-retroviral so that we can mitigate infections and at the same time lessen the severity of the disease, \u201c Browne said on the radio over the weekend. More than 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported across more than 70 countries so far this year.<\/p>\n

All this comes as the country\u2019s ministry of health increased its monkeypox surveillance at the various ports of entry and at health care facilities.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

And in a press statement on Saturday afternoon, the Ministry of Health said they are working to ensure that they have the capacity to test for the monkeypox virus at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center.<\/p>\n

Monkeypox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus which is similar to the smallpox virus. Persons typically experience a fever, a rash, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek attention from their health care provider.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Monkeypox is spread from person to person by direct contact with the rash and bodily fluids.<\/p>\n

Clothing, sheets, towels, and other objects can also be sources of infection.<\/p>\n

The virus is also transmitted from a pregnant mother to her unborn child. Respiratory secretions can also be a source of infection.<\/p>\n

There have been no laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox in Antigua and Barbuda since samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) have all been negative.<\/p>\n
