Four women and 17 men were rescued from the incident, immigration minister Keith Bell told Reuters.<\/p>

The Bahamas police said the boat capsized some 7 miles (11 kilometers) off the island of New Providence.<\/p>\n

The Bahamas is a frequent transit route for Haitian migrants seeking to reach the United States.<\/p>

Dangerous sea voyages in rickety vessels have become increasingly common over the last year as Haitians flee poverty and rising gang violence.<\/p>\n

It comes just days after The US Coast Guard averted what may have been a disaster when it intercepted a ramshackle sailboat off the coast of\u00a0 Florida.<\/p>

Extraordinary images show at least 150 men, women and young children crowded on the boat with no floor place to move on the wooden vessel near Miami.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The US Coast Guard, Miami-Dade police and other law enforcement agencies were on the scene after they intercepted the sailboat on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

The US agencies deployed four boats to surround the ramshackle sailboat before moving closer to toss the migrants life jackets and water.<\/p>\n

\"\"The migrants were transferred from the \u2018overloaded and unsafe sailing vessel\u2019 to the Coast Guard cutter crews, officials said.<\/p>\n

The Miami Fire Department transferred four people to Homestead Hospital for medical treatment.<\/p>\n

The migrants will then be repatriated to their country of origin, the US Coast Guard said.<\/p>\n

A crumbling economy and and a spike in gang-related violence and kidnappings has prompted thousands of Haitians to flee their country in the past year.<\/p>\n

Local Carl Ball was fishing when he saw the overcrowded sailboat filled with people \u2013 and within minutes the agencies arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u2018As I went south, I saw a sailboat sideways and the sails were off to the side and an MDFR boat was next to it,\u2019 Ball told Local 10.\u00a0\u2018They were standing up there on the deck.\u2019<\/p>\n

Officials have not confirmed where the migrants are from, but they are believed to be from Haiti where people are facing gang violence and kidnappings and a shortage of both fuel and electricity is threatening daily life for millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
STATEMENT ON HAITIAN MIGRANT DEATHS<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is extremely saddened by the tragic loss of life at sea of a number of Haitians off the coast of The Bahamas on Sunday 24 July.<\/p>\n

This latest disaster brings to the fore once again the desperate situation in Haiti and the reprehensible nature of the actions of those who are taking advantage of people trying to escape.<\/p>\n

CARICOM will continue to work with Haiti and the international community to bring peace, security and development to our sister nation<\/p>\n

CARICOM looks forward to the apprehension and bringing to justice of those who prey on the hopes and aspirations of vulnerable persons.<\/p>\n

The Community extends its condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives and to the Government and People of Haiti.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
