Saint Anthony\u2019s Secondary School emerged winners of the 2018 Inter-Secondary School Debate Series when the season ended on Tuesday.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The winners staved off competition from Antigua Grammar School to retain the championship with a score of 80-72, in an encounter similar to last year\u2019s finals.<\/p>\n

Debating whether \u201cMember states of the OECS would be better off if they were to unite as a political entity\u201d; both schools were given credit by the judging panel for the high level of presentations in tackling the moot. Team AGS, with members Daniel Antonio and Jether Uzoma served as the proposition, while SASS\u2019s Jewel Harve and Rhea Watkins opposed the moot.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The representatives from both schools expressed gratitude to their parents, teachers and trainers for supporting them throughout the 2018 series in which 10 schools participated.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Jether Uzoma was adjudged better speaker for the proposition, while Rhea Watkins was selected as better speaker for the opposition. She was also named best overall speaker of Tuesday\u2019s encounter.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A new component was added to the Inter-Secondary School debate Series this season, the Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speaking Competition.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Ministry of Education officials in giving a reason for introducing the programme opined that impromptu speaking can greatly enhance oratorical skills, an important element in building well rounded students.<\/p>\n

A total of nine pupils, representing nine schools participated in the competition, where students were given two minutes to speak on various topics without the use of written notes. Six students advanced to the semi-finals and three were selected for the final round held on 10th<\/sup> May, 2018.<\/p>

Following their presentations, Vida Betances of St. Anthony\u2019s Secondary School was declared winner of the inaugural competition. Second and third places were awarded to Orion Warner, Clare Hall Secondary School and Jether Uzoma of Antigua Grammar School respectively.<\/p>
