A new, powerful documentary set in 2004 when the people of Antigua and Barbuda closed a dolphin park, will make its world premiere on Wednesday, May 9 at the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda in St. John\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u2018Dolphin Dilemma \u2013 the Antigua and Barbuda Story\u2019, tells the story of how a small NGO, the Antigua and Barbuda Independent Tourism Promotion Corporation (ABITPC) led the fight to save the dolphins at \u201cDolphin Fantaseas\u201d and ban the capture of these intelligent mammals in Antigua and Barbuda waters.<\/p>

Executive producer and one of ABITPC founders, renowned diver and marine activist, Martha Watkins Gilkes, explains how this documentary came about: \u201cThere have been whispers over the last few years that dolphin park owners are still trying to gain access to the lucrative Caribbean market and although, it is not a solid project proposal, I felt strongly that the time is right to remind us all and educate the new, more environmentally aware youngsters of this story.\u201d<\/p>

Watkins-Gilkes adds that it has a been a labour of love shared with equally passionate environmentalists: \u201cI have to thank the generous spirit of all who participated in the making of this documentary from fellow ABIPC founders and members, Robin Leach and Eloise Green as well as internationally renowned Dolphin activists and authorities \u2013 Dr. Naomi Rose and Ric O\u2019Barry. I also have to thank former Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, media personality Algernon Serpent Watts and leading QC, John Fuller who recounted the 12 months that literally shook our twin island state and turned us from villains to heroes in the eyes of the international, regional and local media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDolphin Dilemma \u2013 The Antigua and Barbuda Story\u2019 is produced by award-winning HaMa Productions, directed by Howard Allen and produced by Mitzi Allen.\u00a0 It has taken a year to produce, as Mitzi Allen explains: \u201cAlthough this event happened 14 years ago, we are very fortunate that many of the leading players were willing and able to recount their memory of this event. We believe that this documentary will serve as a timely reminder as to why islands like ours should not accept investment at any cost. It will also remind our viewers that when communities band together they can force positive change.\u201d<\/p>

Entry for this event is EC$25 donation to the Museum of Antigua & Barbuda, which includes a welcome glass of wine, soft drink and canapes. A special, free screening is being organised for students, date to be announced.<\/p>\n
