Acting Prime Minister the Hon. Steadroy Cutie Benjamin met with Business Leader and recently retired local economic development official from the City of Albuquerque Mims Ralph on Thursday 19th<\/sup> May, where the benefits of the relationship which would be forged between the two entities was discussed.<\/p>\n

President of City of Albuquerque Sister Cities International program Pam Feather, says once confirmed, Antigua and Barbuda will became the first Caribbean island to join the program. Feather says the relationship forged could bring economic, cultural and educational benefits.<\/p>

She added that, a Sister City\/Country program between Albuquerque and Antigua and Barbuda would focus on educational, business, and learning exchanges between the locations\u2019 youth and workforce.<\/p>

A Friendship City or Friendship Cities relationship is often formed by cities as a \u2018stepping stone\u2019 to a more formal \u2018Sister City\u2019 agreement.\u2019<\/p>\n

Friendship City relationships can help communities explore compatibility and develop the expertise and resources needed to maintain consistent programming<\/p>

The goals of the proposed relationship can directly benefit Antigua and Barbuda and the City of Albuquerque by both entities exploring and encouraging opportunities to provide: Training opportunities to Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s young professionals with our University of New Mexico Workforce campuses and Trades certifications.<\/p>\n

Business and government internship programs as a \u201cnext-step\u201d for Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s students, connecting them to selected businesses in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area; New Mexico\u2019s \u201cIn-state\u201d educational institutions, its four-year colleges, two-year community colleges, and local high schools and area charter schools, to consider special programs for the island\u2019s students to study at discounted rates; Antigua and Barbuda can consider encouraging its educational institutions to provide Albuquerque students exchange program access to its University and the West Indies five island campus.<\/p>

The City of Albuquerque through their Sister Cities International program will donate some fire and safety resources to the Fire department.<\/p>
