The Antigua and Barbuda Workers\u2019 Union has reached another important milestone in its struggle to elevate the lives of workers in Antigua and Barbuda. On May 15, the ABWU will commence its 55th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations which will run through May 31.<\/p>

The theme for this year\u2019s anniversary celebrations is \u201cUniting Workers with a Renewed Vision\u201d. The theme underscores the principle of \u201cstrength in numbers\u201d and highlights the Union\u2019s intention to provide strong and decisive leadership that is responsive to the needs and circumstances of the current times.<\/p>

The ABWU honours the legacy of its founding fathers which include Sir. George H. Walter, Sir. Keithlyn Smith, Bro. Malcolm Daniel and Bro. Donald Halstead.<\/p>\n

Their work, along with the efforts of many ordinary men and women \u2013 employed primarily as dock and hotel workers \u2013 secured many of the rights and benefits that we enjoy today.<\/p>

The Social Security Scheme, paid maternity leave, severance pay and a shortened work week were the result of the ABWU\u2019s influence on the government\u2019s legislative agenda.<\/p>\n
