Three healthcare associations are the beneficiaries of a donation of US$30-thousand raised by a charity event to honour cricketing legend and National Hero, Sir Vivian Richards.<\/p>

The Sir Viv @70 Fundraiser Golf Tournament<\/em><\/strong> was held at the Cedar Valley Golf Course on Sunday involving local golfers. Sir Vivian, in whose honour the event was staged to mark his 70th<\/sup> birthday, had indicated to the organisers that he wanted an event that would raise funds for the frontline healthcare workers.<\/p>\n

Sir Vivian told the presentation ceremony that usually when one thinks of war, they immediately think of the traditional items of war such as guns and bombs etc, but that in the war against COVID-19, the \u2018frontline soldiers; were people dressed in PPE\u2019s and face masks.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cWhen we first thought about this event, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to focus on the work of those folks who have done sterling work in the past and who are likely to continue doing the same for years to come. During this \u2018war\u2019 against the virus the folks with the weapons of \u2018mass destruction\u2019 were not the ones needed this time. The real folks, the folks that offered help and protections were the ones to whom we turned, our frontline healthcare professionals. I am very passionate about this matter and that\u2019s why we assembled this group here today so that we can raise funds on their behalf. Someone needs to say a big Thank You to these people,\u201d he declared.<\/p>

Looking around at the people assembled, many of whom are business leaders, Sir Vivian made an appeal for their continued involvement in the event stating that he wanted it to be an annual event with the same objectives in mind.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the main sponsor, Rahul Patil, founder of LITAP, a Chicago-based company, said he grew up in Mumbai, India, where as a boy if he was asked for the full name of the prime minister of India he could not answer, but he knew who I.V.A Richards was. \u201cThis is very emotional and personal for me. I started LITAP two years ago and it has been my dream. We grew up idolizing Sir Viv Richards and I feel truly blessed that LITAP has sponsored this event, the first event that we have sponsored,\u201d he explained. He thanked the local organizing team including Mervyn Richards, Sir Viv\u2019s younger brother, and Debbie Collins for the magnificent work they did in organizing the event.<\/p>

The benefitting association each of which received US$10-thousand are the Antigua and Barbuda Nurses Association, the Antigua and Barbuda Medical Association and the Antigua and Barbuda Emergency Medical Services Association.<\/p>\n

During the event, a short video on the life on Sir Vivian\u2019s mother, Grethel Richards \u2013 was shown to audience. A very emotional Si Viv said he was moved by watching the video. He also said he was especially joyful that his daughter, Masada Richards. had journeyed from India to be in Antigua for the celebrations.<\/p>
