Among these are said to be integrity, sincerity and loyalty. There is certain amount of confidentiality. These often bring out the professionalism in those that see their workplaces as providing opportunities for growth and advancement. These attributes often allow for commonality of understanding, harmonious relations and <strong>\u2018Functional Approach,\u2019<\/strong> particularly as they affect <strong>\u2018Problem Solving.\u2019 <\/strong>These however, are dependent upon an<strong> \u2018Enabling Environment,\u2019 <\/strong>a primary responsibility of<strong> \u2018Management.\u2019<\/strong> In the same world, there is selfishness as there is crookedness. <strong>(i) \u2018\u2026Honour; (ii) \u2026Uphold; and (iii) \u2026Preserve the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda and the Law;<\/strong> and that <strong>(iv)<\/strong> \u2026We will conscientiously; That which they desired to be better positioned with <strong>\u2018Disposable Income,\u2019 was<\/strong> reported to be the long overdue payment of <strong>\u2018Overtime Benefits.\u2019<\/strong> Being subjected to harsh working conditions and social distress, these workers have been appealing for payment that may have undoubtedly, brought them some measure of respite. Though not necessarily functioning in ideal working conditions, the <strong>\u2018ABS Workers\u2019<\/strong> may still have been seen as a happy group of employees cohesively-bonded, and closely and working together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those so assigned <strong>\u2018Managerial Responsibilities,\u2019 <\/strong>not only shall do so in the interest of <strong>\u2018Employers,\u2019<\/strong> but also have a duty of care and concern for the welfare of those they lead and manage. Training and research have revealed certain practices. As it affects workers, none may deny the adverse effect on morale and productivity, as well as on relations between <strong>\u2018Management and Workers.\u2019 <\/strong>It is instructive to note, that not infrequently public workers are impelled to openly express displeasure with existing working conditions. Not infrequently they have also been forced to participate in protestations. Likened to their <strong>\u2018Employers,<\/strong>\u2019 they desire <strong>\u2018Managers\u2019<\/strong> to discharge their managerial duties in keeping with their assigned responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GOOD MANAGERIAL PRACTICES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researching for relevant information on <strong>\u2018Managerial Responsibilities,\u2019<\/strong> this was unearthed; <strong>\u2018\u2026In keeping with the need for management to be productive and responsive to workers and the society in general<\/strong>, g<strong>ood management practices, as well as industrial relations policies that have the confidence of all, must be among the major objectives of management\u2019<\/strong> [1976: Jamaica: Labour Relations Code: Page 5]. On the issue of work-related benefits, this might just be enlighteningly helpful to the <strong>\u2018Management\u2019<\/strong> of workplaces that seemed dogged by industrial upheavals.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTENTIOUS ISSUES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was also revealed that <strong>\u2018\u2026The question of payment for work done is often a contentious area in industrial relations.\u2019<\/strong> It has long been suggested that <strong>\u2018\u2026Salaries, Wages and work-related \u2018Benefits,\u2019<\/strong> shall not only have an agreeable system, but shall also be in conformity with statutory provisions\u2019 [1976: JLRC: Page 13]. There may be no qualms about \u2018Benefits\u2019 reasonably and amicably negotiated and mutually agreed between <strong>\u2018Representative Unions and Employers.\u2019<\/strong> Frequently, such was made to become <strong>\u2018Contentious,\u2019 <\/strong>when either the e<strong>mployer or manager\u2019 <\/strong>starved for scruples. Invariably they have caused the wrath of employees to be descended upon the workplaces with grievous consequences. If such has any relevance to that currently obtains at <strong>\u2018ABS Radio and Television,<\/strong>\u2019 then such seems undeniably true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIFTY FRUSTRATED WORKERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the case of the \u2018ABS Workers, there appears to have been no <strong>\u2018Gesture of Conciliation.\u2019<\/strong> That which continues to occupy the attention of the workers left behind has been the substantial accrued benefits. When it became obvious that no resolution was in sight, some <strong>\u2018Fifty Frustrated Workers\u2019 <\/strong>took to the street. In protestation, they reportedly marched from the \u2018North Street-headquartered <strong>\u2018Antigua Trade and Labour Union (AT&amp;LU)<\/strong>\u2019 office to their <strong>\u2018Cross Street \u2018ABS TV Workplace\u2019<\/strong> <strong>[Observer: December 18, 2018]. <\/strong>Desperately hoping to bring closure, they mounted another protestation, this time outside the workplace. This was said to have been in response to Letters written to some <strong>\u201830 Protesting workers,\u2019 denying them 7 days of wages\u2019 [Observer: February 23, 2019].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAILURE WITH MISERABILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consequent upon these, <strong>\u2018Managers\u2019<\/strong> shall know that <strong>\u2018Workers,\u2019 <\/strong>shall be treated right. They shall also know that spiteful, vindictive actions or contemptuous behavior, are as bad to amicable working relations, as it is not addressing the issue at hand. Not only that, they also have reasonable expectations. These were not to be overwhelmed with disappointment, discontent and frustration. Clearly, the Labour Commissioner appeared to have lacked the ability in bringing the parties to commonality of understanding. Then instead of reaching common ground, the <strong>\u2018Labour Minister\u2019<\/strong> appeared to have found himself inescapably jammed between a <strong>\u2018rock and a hard place.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ATTRIBUTES AND LEGACY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reflecting upon <strong>\u2018Life, Times and Attributes of Auntie Gwen,\u2019<\/strong> she has always shown her love of humanity. She was compassionate, as she was helping and caring.\u2019 Though she was not necessarily an industrialist, she was firm in her beliefs, conviction and commitments. She had displayed a steely resolve that however negligible, whatever <strong>\u2018Retirement Benefits\u2019 <\/strong>she had accrued, and worth <strong>\u2018Marching and Fighting\u2019<\/strong> for. Likened to \u2018Pensioners,\u2019 she also believed that all \u2018Workers\u2019 shall enjoy benefits due to them for their labour. With such belief, she has left a <strong>\u2018Legacy\u2019<\/strong> of a <strong>\u2018Fighting Spirit.\u2019<\/strong> This was made demonstrably clear, when she joined distraught and discontented <strong>\u2018Pensioners\u2019<\/strong> in protestation over \u2018non-payment of their <strong>\u2018Pension Benefits.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PRIDE AND DIGNITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the course of human existence and endeavor, adversity and disappointment, often loom. Thus, under the blazing mid-morning sun, joining scores of other <strong>\u2018Senior Citizens,\u2019<\/strong> they marched expectedly for the much needed <strong>\u2018Pension Benefits.\u2019 <\/strong>Making her presence seen and felt among protesting <strong>\u2018Senior Citizens\u2019<\/strong> not only did she march purposefully, but also with a sense of <strong>\u2018Pride and Dignity.\u2019<\/strong> All that <strong>they ever wanted and<\/strong> demanded from the governing <strong>\u2018Baldwin-Spencer\u2019 <\/strong>administration, was the <strong>\u2018Smallest of Pittances.\u2019<\/strong> Yet in face of disappointment and futility, they suffered indignities of being scoffed at, and rudely referred to as <strong>\u2018Rag Tags.\u2019<\/strong> Likened to current drought conditions that have helped in drying out the \u2018Surface Water\u2019 at <strong>\u2018Potworks Dam,\u2019<\/strong> back then, the conventional revenue streams had all dried up. The financially-depressed <strong>\u2018National Treasury\u2019 a<\/strong>nd<strong> \u2018Social Security Board\u2019<\/strong> could not have facilitated payment that had been long overdue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL JUSTICE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is to be noted that one of the<strong> \u2018Founding Constitutional Principles\u2019 <\/strong>states; \u2018\u2026Whereas the people of Antigua and Barbuda respect the <strong>\u2018Principles of Social Justice,\u2019<\/strong> and therefore, believe that; <strong>(a) \u2018\u2026The operation of their economic system should result in the material resources of their community being so distributed as to serve the common good;<\/strong> <strong>(b)<\/strong> \u2026That there should be adequate means of livelihood for all; <strong>(c)<\/strong> \u2026Labour should not be exploited; and <strong>(d) \u2026That no person should be forced by economic necessity to operate in inhumane conditions\u2019<\/strong> [CO: 1981: Principle: B].<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROTESTING PENSIONERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not very long ago, then <strong>\u2018Information and Public Administration Minister (ABS\/RTV),\u2019<\/strong> <strong>\u2018Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro\u2019 <\/strong>was accused of using the pejorative term <strong>\u2018Rag Tag.\u2019<\/strong> This the Minister emphatically denied. Incidentally, they were never told when payment would have been made. \u00a0They remained undaunted and steadfast, pressing only for that which was due to them. The populace however, and by extension, the electorate revulsed at the use of such term to those that may have been her grandparents. That which she has never denied, was the use of the vernacular; <strong>\u2018Teck dat in yuh Nenen.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SPIRIT OF AUNTIE GWEN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whatever it meant then, and now, whether or not they had taken umbrage for any of these terms, at the <strong>\u2018June 2014 General Election,\u2019<\/strong> the electorate dropped something in her <strong>\u2018Nenen\u2019 [2004-2009: 2009-14]. <\/strong>This was at a time when those that may have marginally passed the <strong>\u2018Prime of Life,\u2019<\/strong> reportedly hurled derogatory insults at the marching <strong>\u2018Pensioners,\u2019<\/strong> then demanding payment of accrued benefits. In spite of the issues currently facing <strong>\u2018ABS General Manager, Erna-Mae Brathwaite,\u2019<\/strong> workers, though disappointed over her handling of their <strong>\u2018Overtime Benefits,\u2019 <\/strong>have never accused her of any such calling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HALF LOVED -HALF DESPISED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, under her <strong>\u2018Managerial Stewardship,\u2019<\/strong> workers have not only become depressingly disgruntled, but also aggrieved. Given the shared experiences of the <strong>\u2018Pensioners,\u2019<\/strong> it appears very likely, that even against her very daughter, <strong>\u2018Erna-Mae Brathwaite,\u2019<\/strong> <strong>\u2018Auntie Gwen\u2019<\/strong> may feel compelled to invoke her <strong>\u2018Fighting Spirit\u2019<\/strong> in the <strong>\u2018ABS Workers.\u2019<\/strong> Clearly <strong>\u2018Half Loved <\/strong>and<strong> \u2018Half Despised,\u2019<\/strong> they asked their <strong>\u2018General Manager,\u2019<\/strong> <strong>\u2018Why has the Management forsaken us?\u2019<\/strong> It was not clear who might be haunted by the <strong>\u2018Spirit of Auntie Gwen,\u2019<\/strong> but it could never be the discontented and displaced workers of<strong> \u2018ABS.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUNTIE GWEN\u2019S DAUGHTER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are those that have contended that only a conducive working environment and speedy and amicable resolutions to the issues of welfare, may bring respite to the frustrated \u2018ABS workers.\u2019. That which <strong>\u2018Auntie Gwen\u2019s Daughter Erna-Mae\u2019<\/strong> may not have known, was that her beloved mother <strong>\u2018Gwendolyn Tonge\u2019<\/strong> and the nation\u2019s <strong>\u2018Auntie Gwen\u2019<\/strong> was very much aware of this <strong>\u2018Principle.\u2019 <\/strong>Though she has long been transitioned to a place where there shall be no \u2018begging, stressing, marching or protesting\u2019 for anything, it was obvious that she may have left a <strong>\u2018Fighting Spirit\u2019<\/strong> in the dedicated workers of the state-owned and run entities called the <strong>\u2018Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting and Television Services (ABS Radio\/Television).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PAYABLE BENEFITS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, workers are now protesting against her daughter, now holding the <strong>\u2018Privileged Position\u2019<\/strong> of <strong>\u2018General Manager\u2019 <\/strong>for delay of <strong>\u2018Payable Benefits.\u2019 <\/strong>Research has revealed that even as the workers had; \u2018\u2026Entreated and implored; <strong>\u2026Sighed and cried;<\/strong> \u2026Bawled and snarled, not even a<strong> \u2018Witch\u2019 <\/strong>would come to their assistance. Moreover, unlike the apparent feisty former parliamentarian, the <strong>\u2018General Manager\u2019<\/strong> has expressed no aspirations in vying for elective office. That which might be said of her, is that she fully understood <strong>\u2018Banking.\u2019<\/strong> In this field of endeavor, she has reportedly acquitted herself exceedingly well. Culturally, research has shown that she had represented the <strong>\u2018Sunny Side Tutorial School\u2019 <\/strong>in a <strong>\u2018Teenage Pageant\u2019 [1973]. <\/strong>She had reportedly performed to the delight of an appreciative audience. \u00a0On the issue of <strong>\u2018Overtime Payment\u2019<\/strong> to workers, she was yet to cause most to smile happily from the <strong>\u2018ABS Studios\u2019<\/strong> to the financial institutions in St. Johns.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORKING WITH OTHERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Researching<\/strong> for this commentary, this quote suddenly popped up. It states; <strong>\u2018\u2026The ability to work well with others, is one of the most important assets you can possess\u2019 [Laura Lyons]. <\/strong>Both <strong>\u2018General Kurt Von Hammerstein-Equord and Laura Lyons\u2019<\/strong> could neither have been speaking to past or present <strong>\u2018General Managers,\u2019 <\/strong>at the state-owned and run entities, <strong>\u2018Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting and Television Services (ABS Radio\/TV).\u2019 <\/strong>Instructively, while on advanced overseas \u2018Managerial Training\u2019 for top organizational positions,\u2019 the; <strong>(i) \u2018\u2026British: (ii) Canadian; and (c) \u2026American Training Institutions,\u2019 <\/strong>have all made reference to a particular historic <strong>\u2018Quote.\u2019<\/strong> Research also provides another interesting <strong>\u2018Quote\u2019<\/strong> by <strong>\u2018German General, Kurt Von Hammerstein-Equord [1878 -1943].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PERCEPTIVE SKILLS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is clear that they intended to develop the <strong>\u2018Perceptive Skills\u2019<\/strong> of future organizational leaders. Such skills often guide informed <strong>\u2018Managerial Decisions.\u2019 <\/strong>It might just be helpful to those with the authority to make or influence managerial and behavioral change. Given such reasoning, this appears suggestive that such officer may be easily expended and replaced, either as circumstances dictate, or situations demand. Then <strong>(iii) \u2018<\/strong>&#8230;He believed that the <strong>\u2018Clever and Lazy\u2019 officer, qualifies for the highest leadership post.<\/strong> He was of the view that such person has the requisite mental clarity and capacity for making difficult decisions.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>STUPID AND INDUSTRIOUS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The officer he had sufficiently assessed as <strong>(iv) \u2018Stupid and Industrious,\u2019 <\/strong>had not fit the <strong>\u2018Vision of the Military.<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0 Sensing immense danger, he declared; <strong>\u2018\u2026This officer must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous\u2019<\/strong> [1933: Wikipedia: General Kurt Von Hammerstein-Equord]. Today, in many organizations, institutions, private and public entities, there are many <strong>\u2018Managers\u2019<\/strong> with these traits. They have made, and continue to make life difficult, as well as creating situations that make work more harrowing for those seen as non-subservient and less unexploitable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ILLUSIONS OF WORKER\u2019S RIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While some workers often harbor certain <strong>\u2018Illusions of Worker\u2019s Rights,\u2019<\/strong> they too have responsibilities and obligations to their <strong>\u2018Employers.\u2019<\/strong> From professional training, knowledge and research, <strong>\u2018Employees\u2019<\/strong> shall know that \u2018\u2026All workers have both an individual and collective responsibility to their <strong>\u2018Employers\u2019<\/strong> to perform the <strong>\u2018Contract of Service\u2019<\/strong> to the best of their ability.\u2019 Universally, a functional and critical role of <strong>\u2018Representative Unions\u2019<\/strong> is this; \u2018\u2026Ensuring workers dedication to the principle of productive work for the good of all\u2019 [Jamaica: Labour Relations Code: Page 6].<\/p>\n<p><strong>PRIMARY UNION RESPONSIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even so, the <strong>\u2018Primary Responsibility\u2019<\/strong> of a <strong>\u2018Trade Union,\u2019<\/strong> is to ensure that e<strong>mployee\u2019s actions do not prejudice their general well-being, particularly health and safety and that which often been viewed as contentious-earnings and work-related benefits.\u2019<\/strong> It needs no instruction to know that workers not only vest authority in <strong>\u2018Unions\u2019<\/strong> for the performance of their industrial functions, but shall also provide financial support for their representative services in pay negotiations or settlement, as well as for dispute resolutions.\u2019 Such speaks neither to illusion nor delusion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There shall be little doubt, that with improved programming and under a management team of <strong>\u2018Erna-Mae Brathwaite and<\/strong> <strong>Garfield Burford,\u2019 <\/strong>workers at the state-owned entities<strong> \u2018Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting and Television Services (ABS),\u2019<\/strong> will have seen vast improvements within these entities. Undoubtedly, the former will have brought to the workplace advanced <strong>\u2018Managerial Skills.\u2019<\/strong> Conversely, the latter will have brought his professional knowledge, experience and expertise to the fields of <strong>\u2018Broadcasting and Journalism.\u2019 <\/strong>That which seemed to have been nagging \u2018Management Problems,\u2019 have been easily identified as; (i) \u2018\u2026An un-enabling work environment; (ii) \u2026Conditions of service that begs for revisitation; and the apparent most contentious has been <strong>(iii) \u2026Non-payment of Overtime Benefits.<\/strong>\u2019 These were said to be issues provoked by a<strong> \u2018Hostile Work Environment.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEEDS OF DISCORD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More often than not, it has always been troubling to <strong>\u2018Managers\u2019 <\/strong>that functioned in isolation and without clarity of understanding of human nature. That which was often seen as fueling resentment or causes <strong>\u2018Seeds of Discord\u2019<\/strong> to be germinated and mushroom into thorny conflicts, was either <strong>\u2018Management\u2019s<\/strong> inability or refusal to reconcile differences or to solve conflicts and disputes expeditiously and amicably. It all started some time, after the middle of <strong>\u2018June 2014.\u2019<\/strong> They were all forced to contend with a <strong>\u2018Management\u2019<\/strong> that was said to be as uncaring as they have been insensitive, uncompassionate and acrimoniously victimizing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INDUSTRIAL COURT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For some time now, the plight of the <strong>\u2018ABS Workers,\u2019 <\/strong>appeared not have been given the requisite administrative and\/or managerial attention. This was said to have triggered consternation in peeved workers, when the issue of <strong>\u2018Overtime Benefits\u2019<\/strong> wend its way to the <strong>\u2018Industrial Court.\u2019<\/strong> Consequent upon constant rambling of discontent being featured in the local media and that which was reportedly applied by the <strong>\u2018German General,\u2019<\/strong> neither <strong>\u2018Information Minister Melford Nicholas,\u2019 <\/strong>nor<strong> \u2018Labour Minister Steadroy Benjamin\u2019<\/strong> shall encounter difficulties in identifying persons with traits of <strong>\u2018Stupidity and Industry.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WORKERS\u2019 WOES- AUNTIE GWEN\u2019S SPIRIT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For just over 7 years, the non-payment of<strong> \u2018Overtime Benefits,\u2019<\/strong> seemed to have driven to the edge of impatience and intolerance. Not only that the <strong>\u2018ABS Workers\u2019<\/strong> appeared to have seen more <strong>\u2018Woes\u2019<\/strong> descended upon them, but also their miseries appear to have grown in leaps and bounds. Summing up their position, they seemed to have become <strong>\u2018Demoralized; \u2026Disillusioned; and Dissatisfied.\u2019 <\/strong>It may have been for this reason that <strong>\u2018Auntie Gwen\u2019s\u2019<\/strong> invisible <strong>\u2018Spirit,\u2019<\/strong> has spurred them into action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INDUSTRIAL BATTLE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though the apparent long drawn out <strong>\u2018Industrial Battle,\u2019 <\/strong>bears no similarity in nature, scope and magnitude, it still appears capable of being likened to the<strong> \u2018Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s\u2019 <\/strong>ordered military invasion of the<strong> \u2018Ukrainian\u2019 <\/strong>nation, and the savagery being unleashed upon its innocent population<strong> [BBC: February 24, 2022]. <\/strong>In the case of the affected<strong> \u2018ABS Workers,\u2019 <\/strong>in a Pandemic that calls for adequacy of resources, particularly, a sufficiency of <strong>\u2018Disposable Income,\u2019 <\/strong>none may deny the psychological impact, some things often play on the human mind. Seemingly, if it becomes necessary for them to march from <strong>\u2018\u2026McNish Mountain and Boggy Peak\u2019 to St. John [Dr. Errol Cort:<\/strong> Budget Presentation: December 30, 2005],\u2019 her <strong>\u2018Spirit\u2019<\/strong> shall be with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINISTERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lack of understanding of human nature, was often seen through mounting complaints, questionable work ethics, chaos and confusion, indiscipline and an untenable malaise of <strong>\u2018Absenteeism.\u2019 <\/strong>These often suggest poor<strong> \u2018Managerial Skills\u2019 <\/strong>and signals worker\u2019s desire for managerial change. The \u2018ABS Workers,\u2019 said to have been incessantly calling upon the <strong>\u2018Management\u2019<\/strong> to bring closure to a <strong>\u2018Long Running Dispute,\u2019 <\/strong>have seen their calls go unanswered. This is not only part of the functional responsibility of effective <strong>Managers,\u2019<\/strong> but also those with <strong>\u2018Ministerial Responsibilities,\u2019<\/strong> individually or collectively, with an appreciation for the human dignity and worth, may have added to their financial miseries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NON-INSPIRING &#8211; NON-EMPOWERING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given the workers\u2019 resolve, made bureaucratically difficult, and compounded by apparent <strong>\u2018Management and Ministerial\u2019 <\/strong>impotence, \u2018Labour Union\u2019 representatives and their clients, have all contended that the <strong>\u2018Principles of Social Justice\u2019<\/strong> appeared to have been observed more in breaches, than managerial, administrative and ministerial best practices. This seems clearly contradictory to the subscribed <strong>\u2018Oath of Office\u2019<\/strong> by; <strong>(i) \u2018Information Minister Melford Nicholas; and (ii) \u2026Labour Minister Steadroy \u2018Cutie\u2019 Benjamin.\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DEDICATED TO SERVE AND EMPOWER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, it starkly contradicts <strong>\u2018Prime Minister Gaston Browne\u2019s\u2019<\/strong> well-documented manifestoed pledge<strong>;<\/strong> <strong>\u2018Dedicated to Serve and Empower\u2019 [June-2014: Strategic Vision to Rebuild and Empower\u2019<\/strong> [Cover Photo]. That which appears most disconcerting to the \u2018ABS Workers\u2019 may have been the \u2018non-inspiring and non-empowering\u2019 way the issue of <strong>\u2018Overtime Benefits\u2019<\/strong> has been handled. For whatever, reasons, those positioned to observe certain practices, attitudes and behaviors,\u2019 were often <strong>seen as either impotent or incompetent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPOTENT OR INCOMPETENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While there often comes a time when <strong>\u2018Gods\u2019<\/strong> become <strong>\u2018Tyrants\u2019<\/strong> and<strong> \u2018Goddesses\u2019 <\/strong>become <strong>\u2018Witches,\u2019<\/strong> there also comes a time when not only such reign shall end, but also when all victimization and oppression must cease. Research has shown that having attracted of some of the more intelligent persons, conditions of service have seen a steady <strong>\u2018Exodus of Workers\u2019<\/strong> from these entities. On entry to the workplace, no matter the managerial embracement, with expressions frequently disguised by hypocrisy, the new worker invariably, develops his own feelings about the <strong>\u2018Manager.\u2019<\/strong> This may have been the experiences of several <strong>\u2018ABS Workers.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TAKING FLIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has also been widely accepted that where practicable, they shall assist workers in achieving desirable and set goals. It has always been the human experience that when evidence suggests that Managers managed by rigidity in application of<strong> Rules, seen as stringent,<\/strong> the disenchanted worker always know that it was time to <strong>\u2018Take Flight.\u2019<\/strong> This has been the universal experience of many workers. That which some <strong>\u2018Managers\u2019<\/strong> may not have factored in their <strong>\u2018Management Plan,\u2019<\/strong> has always been the <strong>\u2018Reasonable Expectations\u2019<\/strong> workers hold for themselves. That which often appeared to have compounded some situations, has often been unconventional style of <strong>\u2018Management,\u2019 <\/strong>insensitivity and uncaring attitude.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THOSE THAT TOOK FLIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As there may be no authoritative and effective leadership, workers often feel disenchanted, demoralized and discontented. As it relates to <strong>\u2018ABS Radio and Television,\u2019<\/strong> while these may or may not have been the experiences of some workers, it begs the fundamental question;\u2019 <strong>\u2018Why was the \u2018ABS\u2019 Management Team failed to retain them?<\/strong> A short list has shown that among the departees have been veteran newscasters <strong>\u2018Andy Liburd; \u2026Phil George; \u2026Anderson Edgehill; \u2026Leon Norville; \u2026Elisa Leah Graham; \u2026Alciana Tittle; \u2026Amar Spencer; \u2026Patrice Martin; and Jamoul Francis.\u2019<\/strong> Except those on inter-departmental transfers, the others have all left gracefully and peacefully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MATTERS OF WELFARE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When workers resigned, whatever the reasons for so doing, none may deny that among a <strong>\u2018Manager\u2019s Responsibilities\u2019<\/strong> to his\/her employer is one that speaks to <strong>\u2018High Productivity.\u2019<\/strong> This necessarily requires a conducive environment, highly motivated, competent and efficient workers. The workplace has never been the place, neither for inefficiency, nor mediocrity.
