Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a new interview that New York would never again be\u00a0crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, promising, \u201cI\u2019m not going to shut it down again, you can count on that.\u201d<\/p>

The\u00a0Democratic Party nominee for governor<\/a>\u00a0vowed to not reimpose COVID-related restrictions that ground the state to a halt \u2014 as the Big Apple\u00a0faces an uptick in cases.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to protect the health of New Yorkers, but I\u2019m also protecting the economy,\u201d she told John Catsimatidis, host of \u201cThe Cats Roundtable,\u201d in an interview out Sunday.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m not going to shut it down again, you can count on that.\u201d<\/p>

Hochul\u2019s comments came after New York City health commissioner Dr.\u00a0Ashwin Vasan\u00a0revealed Friday the five boroughs will soon shift to a \u201cmedium-risk\u201d\u00a0level due to an increase in cases driven by the\u00a0highly contagious Omicron subvariant<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the next few days, likely by early next week, we\u2019re going to be entering a new level of risk, moving from a low-risk environment to a medium-risk environment on the basis of cases,\u201d he explained on NY1.<\/p>

The five boroughs are currently considered a \u201clow\u201d risk for community spread, but health officials say the new subvariant of Omicron, BA.2, as of Wednesday accounted for about 80% of the state\u2019s infections.<\/p>\n

As of Friday, the COVID-19 positivity rate in New York City measured on a seven-day average was 4.46% \u2014 up from 1.46% at the same point in March. Statewide, the seven-day average positivity rate was a slightly higher 4.68% \u2014 a significant increase from the 1.85%\u00a0reported March 19<\/a>.<\/p>

Meanwhile, Hochul said she\u2019s working closely with Mayor Eric Adams to ensure that Big Apple tourism isn\u2019t affected by the city\u2019s\u00a0surging crime rate.<\/a><\/p>

\u201cWe are seeing an increase in cases and people are getting anxious, and that might affect whether people come at this time, but they will not stay away because of the crime issue,\u201d she declared in the WABC interview, less than a week after a gunman in Brooklyn\u00a0opened fire on a crowded rush-hour train in Brooklyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to lean hard on this. I\u2019m working with the mayor. We now have relationships with the mayor\u2018s office that didn\u2019t exist for a decade,\u201d she added, in reference to\u00a0the hostile relationship<\/a>\u00a0between disgraced ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Mayor Bill de Blasio.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we roll up our sleeves, we work with our law enforcement to get the job done, while respecting the rights of individuals, which is important to us as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March, major crimes increased by 37%, NYPD statistics released earlier this month showed. In the subway system,\u00a0major felonies reported have risen 68%\u00a0<\/a>so far this year, according to NYPD data. Robberies underground have surged by 72%, felony assaults have spiked by 28%, and grand larcenies have increased by 110%, department stats show.<\/p>\n

In the Sunday interview, Hochul\u00a0continued to tout<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0key accomplishments<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0belatedly passed state budget<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 saying she is \u201creally proud\u201d of the measures signed into law, including tweaks to\u00a0progressive pre-trial policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about keeping the core value of bail reform because, at one time, two people accused of the same low-level crime, one went home, and one went to jail waiting for a trial. We knew that was unfair,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut some of the more serious offenses, like gun possession offenses, were left out of being bail eligible. \u2026 We stopped that. We [now] have gun charges back under the coverage of the bail laws. They can either be arrest-eligible or bail-eligible. We fixed that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot of people running for office say we didn\u2019t do anything. Well, they ought to look at the law and know what we accomplished,\u201d she added. \u201cI\u2019m really proud of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about why New Yorkers should vote for her in the\u00a0upcoming primary and general elections<\/a>, Hochul pointed to her work ethic and ability to connect with New Yorkers across the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I\u2019m the hardest-working person they are ever going to meet. And I fight like hell for them every single day,\u201d she told\u00a0Catsimatidis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m rough and tumble, I know how to get the job done, and I\u2019m out there in communities, I know this state \u2014 having been lieutenant governor \u2014 I know it better than anybody.
