The two women who are confined at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility all-women\u2019s prison in New Jersey are pregnant after reportedly having sex with a transgender inmate.<\/p>\n

Dan Sperrazza, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Corrections, confirmed the development saying that the women became pregnant after \u201cconsensual sexual relationships with another incarcerated person.\u201d<\/p>

The prison facility started housing transgender inmates in 2019 following a lawsuit filed by the ACLU and a transgender woman who complained of suffering from abuse in a men\u2019s prison. The prison now houses 27 transgender inmates, who are biologically men identifying as women.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Speaking on how the inclusion of transgender inmates at the all-women prison came about, Jeanne LoCicero, the ACLU\u2019s \u00a0legal director revealed that allowing biological men who identify as women to be housed along with biological women is \u201cin line with New Jersey\u2019s strong anti-discrimination laws that prevent discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Jersey Superior Officers Association President Edward Sullivan revealed that they tried to oppose the policy change but it was to no avail<\/p>

\u201cWe opposed this policy change believing it would be detrimental to the general population of female inmates being housed at Edna Mahan and also bring added stress to our correctional police officers assigned to this institution,\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, following complaints about sexual assaults and other problems in the facility, the prison is slated for closure.<\/p>
