On March 25, the Department of Environment (DOE) signed an MoU with the Japanese Corporation WOTA to formalize their collaboration in support of conducting research and testing of WOTA\u2019s water treatment devices in select areas in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The testing will assess the viability of WOTA\u2019s technology and products, in homes and other buildings on the twin-islands, and identifying the best practices for installation.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

WOTA\u2019s small scale, decentralized, water-recycling technology and products are said to improve the availability of quality water supply that meets applicable water standards.<\/p>

The DOE and WOTA made their initial connections at the Conference of the Parties 26 (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an annual international climate conference, where WOTA\u2019s Director Ryo Yamada conducted a presentation at the AOSIS Pavilion to inform representatives from AOSIS Members States about WOTA\u2019s water treatment technology.<\/p>

\u201cClimate change and other extreme weather events have compromised water security and hygiene for Antigua and Barbuda and other small island developing states (SIDS). These events have made our nation reliant on desalination or importing water for every-day use. Sourcing water in such a manner is costly for the average Antiguan and Barbudan. This partnership may be able to provide access to clean, safe and affordable water, to Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d says Honourable Minister of Health, Wellness, and the Environment Sir Molwyn Joseph.<\/p>\n

The DOE is already actively investing in innovative technologies, including wind and solar energy, and this initiative will increase efforts to achieve the country\u2019s environmental and sustainable development goals. Thus far, the DOE has implemented climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, which support capacity building at the grassroots level and increased resilience to adverse climate change induced conditions such as droughts and hurricanes.<\/p>
