SOURCE NY POST: President Biden released a video message to mark International Transgender Day of Visibility on Thursday, saying that transgender people are \u201cmade in the image of God\u201d and that their parents should affirm their gender identity.<\/p>

Biden, who as a senator backed an array of anti-LGBT legislation, slammed what he called \u201chateful bills\u201d in several states that restrict transgender participation in girls\u2019 sports and limit discussion of sexuality and gender identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo everyone celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility, I want you to know that your president sees you \u2014 Jill, Kamala, Doug, our entire administration sees you \u2014 for who you are: made an image of God and deserving of dignity, respect and support,\u201d Biden said in a video message name-checking the first lady, vice president and second gentleman.<\/p>

\u201cWe know it\u2019s hard when there are those out there who don\u2019t see you, don\u2019t respect you,\u201d the president added. \u201cFor example, the onslaught of anti-transgender state laws attacking you and your families is simply wrong.\u201d<\/p>

Those laws include\u00a0Florida legislation<\/a>\u00a0that prohibits classroom instruction about sexuality and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade and laws in states including Arizona and Oklahoma that restrict transgender girls and women from competing in female sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis administration is standing up for you against all these hateful bills,\u201d Biden said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re committed to advancing transgender equality in the classroom, on the playing field, at work, in our military, and our housing and health care systems \u2014 everywhere, simply everywhere.\u201d<\/p>

He continued, \u201cTo parents of transgender children, affirming your child\u2019s identity is one of the most powerful things you can do to keep them safe and healthy. Any transgender American who\u2019s struggling, please know you\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president ended the video by saying, \u201cYou\u2019re so brave. You belong and we have your back.\u201d<\/p>

Biden has a mixed record on gay and transgender rights. As a senator in the 1990s, he was\u00a0one of 32<\/a>\u00a0Senate Democrats who voted to impose a federal ban on same-sex marriage. He also voted for the legislation that imposed the military\u2019s since-repealed \u201cDon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d policy and for a\u00a01994 amendment<\/a>\u00a0to ban schools from using federal funds \u201cfor the promotion of homosexuality as a positive lifestyle alternative.\u201d<\/p>

As vice president, Biden in 2012 said he was \u201cabsolutely comfortable\u201d with same-sex marriage \u2014 a remark widely seen as inspiring President Barack Obama to abandon his prior opposition to gays and lesbians marrying. Biden last year also repealed former President Donald Trump\u2019s ban on\u00a0transgender people serving in the military<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gallup survey data released in February found that\u00a0about 0.7%<\/a>\u00a0of Americans self-identify as transgender. About 1.5% are gay, 1% are lesbian and 4% said they are bisexual.<\/p>\n
