Bill Maher dived into the Oscars controversy in his show on Friday, saying that Jada Pinkett Smith should \u2018thank God\u2019 that alopecia is her biggest medical concern.<\/p>

\u2018If you are so lucky in life as to have that be your medical problem, just say \u2018thank God,\u201d the HBO Real Time host joked to his panelists, attorney Laura Coates and former presidential and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s not life threatening. It\u2019s part of \u2014 for most people, 80 percent of men, 50 percent of women \u2014 it\u2019s part of aging,\u2019 Maher continued.<\/p>

\u2018Aging is, trust me I know, it\u2019s the degradation of the flesh. It happens to all of us,\u2019 said Maher, 66.<\/p>

Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia areata, a hair-loss autoimmune disorder which is distinct from androgenic alopecia, the pattern baldness that often accompanies aging in many men, and some women.<\/p>\n

After Oscars presenter Chris Rock cracked a joke about Pinkett Smith\u2019s shaved head at Sunday\u2019s ceremony, saying that she could star in \u2018GI Jane 2\u2019, her husband Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped the comedian.<\/p>

But Maher argued that Smith\u2019s sensitivity over his wife\u2019s hair loss was misplaced.<\/p>\n

\u2018You know, just put on a f***ing wig like everybody else at the Oscars if it bothers you so much,\u2019 the commentator joked.<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>\n

During the panel discussion, Coates said she couldn\u2019t believe Smith received a standing ovation when he won the Best Actor award just minutes after the infamous slap.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u2018I thought, \u2018Why is he even there to get the award?\u2019 said Coates, a CNN legal analyst and former federal prosecutor.<\/p>\n

Yang responded: \u2018Part of it was he\u2019s Will Smith. Anyone else would have been ushered out.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019re always talking about micro-aggressions,\u2019 Maher said of the celebrities who applauded Smith.<\/p>\n

But \u2018suddenly, they were OK with this,\u2019 he added, saying that it was a moment that \u2018showed broken morals.\u2019<\/p>\n

Maher wasted no time jumping into the controversy in his show, addressing the slap heard \u2019round the world in his opening monologue on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u2018Thank you all for coming and putting on a brave face,\u2019 Maher said, adding that everyone was still \u2018processing\u2019 the events of the Oscars. \u2018To Will Smith: stay strong and I got your back.\u2019<\/p>\n

Maher paused a second and added: \u2018April Fools. You\u2019re a d**k.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Look, I\u2019m not here to humiliate Will Smith. He gets enough of that at home,\u2019 Maher added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Every single person in America was talking about the sucker punch heard \u2019round the world so that whole \u2018Keep my wife\u2019s name out of your mouth\u2019 didn\u2019t really work out.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018And the Oscars, wow \u2014 There was more action in three seconds than in three hours of The Power of the Dog,\u2019 Maher cracked, referring to the lengthy Benedict Cumberbatch Western.<\/p>\n

\u2018Who would have thought the movie coming out of the Oscars with all the buzz was GI Jane,\u2019 the host continued.<\/p>\n

On Friday night, Smith in a shock announcement resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in the wake of his on-stage assault of Rock.<\/p>\n

Smith, in a statement first obtained by Variety, called his actions during the Oscars ceremony \u2018shocking, painful and inexcusable,\u2019 adding that he would accept any additional consequences issued by the Academy\u2019s Board of Governors.<\/p>\n

\u2018The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,\u2019 Smith said. \u2018I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.\u2019<\/p>\n

The actor also acknowledged that slapping Rock during the ceremony caused other award winners to be overshadowed.<\/p>\n

\u2018I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film,\u2019 Smith, 53, said.<\/p>\n

He also shared how \u2018change takes time\u2019 and he is now \u2018committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Academy said it has accepted Smith\u2019s \u2018immediate resignation\u2019 and will \u2018continue to move forward\u2019 with its disciplinary proceedings against him for violations of the group\u2019s standards of conduct.<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s resignation came two days after the organization met to initiate the disciplinary hearings.<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s shocking move comes just one day after sources close to the actor confirmed to The Sun that he and his lawyers had planned to write to the Academy to plead his case ahead of his upcoming hearing on April 18.<\/p>\n

\u2018Things are hanging in the balance. He will write an official letter to apologize, and effectively beg for their forgiveness,\u2019 the source revealed Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u2018He is also expected to hold a call with show bosses in the next 24 hours. April 18 is D-Day, though \u2014 he will find out if he still has an Oscar, and quite possibly, a career.\u2019<\/p>\n

Sources familiar with the situation also claim the fate of his upcoming projects, including the Apple-funded slave escape drama Emancipation, remains in question.<\/p>\n

\u2018Production executives and studio chiefs do not want to be seen picking a side too early,\u2019 the insider said, noting that Smith was expected to return for a fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise although no start date has been set yet.<\/p>\n

News of the actor\u2019s resignation also followed a Good Morning America interview with Oscars producer Will Packer that aired Friday morning and detailed the Academy\u2019s immediate response to the attack.<\/p>\n

After the actor onto the Oscars stage on Sunday and hit Rock, Academy officials asked Smith to leave the ceremony, Packer said. The producer claimed they were considering physically removing Smith, an option that he successfully lobbied against.<\/p>\n

Packer said that his co-producer Shayla Cowan informed him that Academy officials \u2018were about to physically remove Will Smith.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I had not been a part of those conversations, and so I immediately went to the Academy leadership that was on site and I said, \u201cChris Rock does not want that. Rock has made it clear that he does not want to make a bad situation worse\u201d,\u2019 said Packer.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was advocating what Rock wanted in that time, which was not to physically remove Will Smith at that time. Because as it has now been explained to me, that was the only option,\u2019 he said. \u2018There was a conversation, that I was not a part of, to ask him to voluntarily leave.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, a source close to Rock told TMZ denied that the comedian was ever asked about removing Smith from the theater.<\/p>\n

\u2018Chris told Packer \u2018I\u2019m not pressing charges. All I want to do is leave.\u2019 He was never asked if he wanted Will removed. This is the Academy covering itself.\u2019<\/p>\n
