Twenty aspiring and professional journalists and sports commentators will undergo three-days of training as a workshop geared towards exposing and enhancing their capabilities begins today in Antigua.<\/p>

The workshop is set to take place at the Media Centre of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Organizers say the workshop aims to discover a cadre of new reporters while enhancing the capabilities of existing journalists in their reporting, writing and broadcasting skills and abilities. It will also explore new journalistic methods as well as use of social media.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Participants have been drawn from Antiguan media houses, national sports associations, schools, sports clubs and other organizations. They will be tutored on the techniques of news-gathering; reporting (scripted and live); interviewing, story-writing; packaging; feature-writing; photography; videography; editing and production.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

Renowned Guyana-born journalist and broadcaster Orin Gordon, formerly of the BBC Caribbean Service, assisted by Antiguan and regional presenters, will conduct the sessions beginning at 5pm on Friday and ending at 8pm and continuing on Saturday and Sunday from 9am-3pm.<\/p>\n

Trinidadian-based Gordon, who has more than 30 years\u2019 experience in media and commentary, will be supported by veteran ABS Radio\/TV sports journalist and commentator, Jack Matthew, Sir Andy Roberts, the legendary West Indies pacer, Zorol Barthley, ex-Windies youth captain and comments personality, journalist and communications specialist, Carolyn Thomas-Parker, and Barbadian Philip Hackett, a commentator who produces a podcast, Anything Cricket.<\/p>

The workshop is organized by the Antiguan-based High Stakes Media Groups which publishes the Cricket Special magazine and the SportsWorld bi-weekly sports newspaper.<\/p>\n

High Stakes Media president and chief executive officer, Colin James, an experienced Antiguan and Barbudan journalist and commentator, says he is delighted that they have attracted one of the region\u2019s top journalists and broadcasters to conduct the workshop with assistance from a proven field of resource personnel.<\/p>

\u201cThe attendees will leave this seminar better equipped and capable of handling and dealing with their task be it as a reporter, writer, broadcaster or commentator,\u201d James remarks,<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Gordon, who has worked for several regional and international media entities, says he\u2019s looking forward to imparting a wide range of techniques and skills to the participants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will be exposed to as many facets of journalism and broadcasting as the aim is to ensure that we develop new and existing media practitioners to ensure the continued succession of quality journalists and broadcasters in Antigua and the region,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Support and sponsors of the workshop include the Citizenship by Investment Unit, the Ministry of Sports, Dickenson Bay Cottages, Digicel and the Larder.<\/p>\n
