On March 14, the Department of Environment (DOE) conducted an environment management training workshop with eight local educational institutions covering training in the development and maintenance of School Environmental Management plans as part of the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0National Communication (4NC) Project at the Department of Environment Conference Room.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Participants were introduced to the 4NC Project, the requirements and outline of Environmental Management plans (EMPs) and the concept of Monitoring and Evaluation.<\/p>\n

The schools represented at the workshop were Gospel Light Academy, Jennings Secondary, Gilbert\u2019s Agricultural and Rural Development Center, St. Nicholas Primary, St. John\u2019s Catholic Primary, Adele School, Seventh Day Adventist Secondary, and Freetown Primary.<\/p>

Environmental Management Plans examine how an activity may negatively impact the environment and sets out clear actions and commitments from the entity performing the activity to minimize, avoid or manage these environmental impacts. Some of the ways these Environmental Management Plans will benefit the schools include: helping them to minimize their impact on the environment, save money by reducing waste generation and energy usage, streamline how waste is managed by the schools, and open new opportunities for access to funding and grants.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This workshop gave the participating schools all of the necessary tools to plan, develop, review and maintain their Environmental Management Plans through the assistance and engagement of experts from the Department of Environment and other local and OECS regional partners.<\/p>\n

The 4NC Project involves the\u00a0preparation of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s\u00a04th National Communication (4NC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).\u00a0\u00a0This important communication is a report that each Party to the Convention prepares periodically in accordance with the guidelines developed and adopted by the Conference of the Parties (COP) and is in alignment with Antigua & Barbuda\u2019s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on climate change. The 4th<\/sup>\u00a0National Communication (4NC) will inform stakeholders through the documentation of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s progress to mitigate and adapt to global climate change and will include recommendations for policy actions that respect environmental and social safeguards, including gender.\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s National Focal Point and Project Coordinator for this project are Ambassador Diann Black-Layne and Christa-Joy Burton respectively.<\/p>
