Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs E Paul Chet Greene has been given the power to extend the deadline for illegal migrants to participate in the amnesty program.<\/p>

A note from the Cabinet said the decision was taken after government ministers examined a report from Greene on the amnesty.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Cabinet learned that the Immigration Department can effectively process 80 persons daily and that may prove to be insufficient for the 40 working days, six hours per day, to achieve the object of addressing the needs of the Amnesty Program. The law was adjusted to give the Minister authority to go beyond the time frame, if necessary,\u201d the note said.<\/p>

Over 2,000 people are eligible to participate in the amnesty that ends on April 30.<\/p>

Meanwhile, lawful residents of Antigua and Barbuda from the Dominican Republic do not require visas to re-enter after visiting their home country.<\/p>\n

But the government said Dominicans, who spend more than six months abroad, would lose their residence status under the law.<\/p>
