While the Prime Minister\u2019s Chief of Staff Lionel \u2018Max\u2019 Hurst has been removed from a weekly prime-time Observer Radio slot, he has not been \u201cbanned\u201d from the station\u2019s airwaves.<\/p>

That\u2019s the word from Observer boss Algernon \u2018Serpent\u2019 Watts who told yesterday\u2019s \u2018Connecting with Dave Lester Payne\u2019 show that the ABLP stalwart was \u201cfree to call in and contribute like everyone else\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Controversy erupted over the weekend after Watts told his Saturday afternoon radio show that he was fed up with Hurst\u2019s \u201clies\u201d during the Chief of Staff\u2019s long-standing Monday morning interview on the Observer AM show.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019ve had enough of him, he nah come back here,\u201d said Watts, who is running for the opposition UPP party as a candidate in the next general election.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

His comment was\u00a0promptly picked up by another local media house which ran the audio clip under the headline \u2018Max Hurst banned from Observer Radio<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne was quick to retort<\/a>\u00a0that Hurst was the ruling ABLP party\u2019s designated spokesman, and that it was not for Observer to decide who was \u201ccarrying the Labour Party message\u201d.<\/p>

\u201cMax is the Chief of Staff, he sits in the Cabinet, he\u2019s au fait with our issues. If they ban Max, they are banning the Labour Party,\u201d Browne said.<\/p>\n

The furore also prompted a number of ABLP ministers to declare their intention to shun all of Observer\u2019s platforms and its reporters in protest.<\/p>

However, Watts said on Monday that his comments had been taken out of context.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cMax is free to call in and contribute like everyone else. He had a prime-time slot on Observer where he comes and spreads his manure. And I just said \u2018enough of that\u2019,\u201d Watts, the company\u2019s managing director and \u2018Snakepit\u2019 show host, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t even a solo decision,\u201d Watts continued, adding that if Cabinet ministers wanted to boycott Observer it would be to \u201ctheir detriment, not ours\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have without question the largest listenership,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cObserver will survive. Observer has survived your constant daily attacks, your sabotage. We survive everything you throw at us.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we will survive by the grace of God and the good people out there who are willing to stand and fight with us,\u201d Watts pledged.<\/p>\n

He added that, despite his bid for the St George constituency, he had \u201cnever intervened\u201d editorially with Observer\u2019s news team or its show hosts. \u2014 OBSERVER Newsco<\/p>\n
