THE CITIZEN: The body of a 75-year-old Frenchman who was trying to row across the Atlantic has been found inside the cabin of his boat, his support team told AFP Saturday.<\/p>

Savin drops off the map<\/h2>\n

Former paratrooper and avid triathlete Savin set off from mainland Portugal\u2019s southern tip on January 1, but there had been no contact with him since overnight Thursday to Friday when he activated two distress beacons.<\/p>

It was just his latest adventure after crossing the Atlantic alone in a custom-built barrel in 2019, a 127-day trip followed by thousands on Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very worried,\u201d a team of France-based volunteers following his odyssey told AFP in a statement.<\/p>

\u201cWe haven\u2019t heard from him since 00:34 yesterday (Friday) morning,\u201d when he released \u201ctwo distress beacons, telling us he was \u2018in great difficulty\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

His daughter in a Facebook post said a search operation \u201cwas immediately set in motion in coordination with the French, Portuguese and US sea rescue services\u201d.<\/p>

He was last heard of north of the Madeira islands off the northwest coast of Africa, and heading towards Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.<\/p>

Shortly after leaving on January 1, unfavourable wind conditions forced the adventurer to extend his trip by 900 kilometres (550 miles).<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, he had reported \u201cstrong swell and\u2026 wind\u201d on Facebook, adding he had been forced to switch from using an electric water desalinator to a backup one operated by hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s costing me physical energy,\u201d he wrote. But \u201cbe assured, I am not in danger\u201d.<\/p>\n

Savin, who said rowing across the Atlantic was a way to \u201claugh at old age\u201d, celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday last week on board his two-cabin canoe.<\/p>\n

The vessel, which is eight metres long and 1.70 metres wide, has a rowing station at its centre.<\/p>\n

He left with it packed with 300 kilos (660 pounds) of equipment, including freeze-dried food, a spear gun to fish and a heater, as well as the two desalinators.<\/p>\n

To celebrate his birthday, he had also brought along his mandolin, foie gras and champagne.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am off on holiday to the open sea,\u201d he had said before leaving.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will row eight hours a day and when the wind blows too hard, I\u2019ll close myself in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He was looking forward to an extra safety measure that he did not have during his last barrel crossing: a tracker to make him visible to the radars of passing cargo ships.<\/p>\n
