The Chairperson of Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority (ABPA), Senator Mary-Claire Hurst, is remembering port worker Eduardo Pyle as one of the organisation’s finest employees in operations and management. Mr. Pyle, who was employed by the port as a Health and Safety Officer, passed away on Saturday at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre following a period of illness.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

Senator Hurst said while it was known that Pyle was ailing, there was still hope he would have pulled through so the news of his passing came as a shock. She recalled an encounter with Mr. Pyle in 2014 when he expressed an interest in contributing to the ABPA.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe joined the staff when I became chairperson of the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority. He reached out to me in terms of wanting to contribute because he was one of the best in Antigua and Barbuda in that area and so I spoke with Prime Minister Browne just around 2014 and the prime minister said of course!<\/p>

“In addition to Mr. Pyle wanting to be part of the team, he was also a classmate of Prime Minister Browne who knew his work, so he agreed without hesitation and so I decided to take him on board,\u201d Hurst recounted. According to Senator Hurst, Pyle was welcomed into the very close knit ABPA community in which he would go on to provide exemplary service. \u201cWe had him responsible specifically for health and safety and then he worked his way into operations and he was one of the finest in that area.<\/p>

 <\/p>\n

He was a soldier, he had the port at heart I can tell you that without fear,\u201d said Hurst. Senator Hurst added that despite his illness, Mr. Pyle never stopped working, providing her daily with information on the port\u2019s operations, the most recent being about one week ago, in which he detailed arrivals, departures and the number of containers that were offloaded from vessels.<\/p>\n

The late manager is described as being well liked and appreciated by the management team. \u201cAll of the managers inquired about him on a daily basis and visited and when there were issues and he needed assistance, e tried to see how we could have solved them,\u201d Senator Hurst pointed out.<\/p>

\u201cThe managers were there yesterday (Saturday) after he took his last breath. They arrived at the hospital as soon as they were called to give his wife the support and they were the ones who dealt with the final rites and had him transported to the funeral home.\u201d Several employees at the port are expected to fill the void left by Mr. Pyle\u2019s passing to ensure there are no disruptions in the operations at the port. The chairperson noted it will be a difficult period for the ABPA’s staff, but she assured that work will go on, especially as Mr. Pyle put measures in place to ensure that there would be no disruptions in service if ever the time came when he was unable to carry on.
