approaching asteroid is known as 7482 (1994 PC1) and it was discovered in 1994, according to NASA.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--tablet\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"tablet\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--desktop\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"desktop\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1A2AA534-3CAB-F45B-4E85-4999DE1885DB\">Nobody expects 7482 (1994 PC1) to hit Earth, but it&#8217;s the closest the asteroid<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>will come for the next two centuries, according to NASA projections. That honor belongs to the asteroid 3122 Florence (1981 ET3), which flew by and missed colliding with Earth on September 1, 2017. That asteroid is estimated to be between 2.5 miles and 5.5<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>miles wide, and it make another pass again on September 2, 2057.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_FA64DFE6-A271-E61F-51A1-49A2FA17B31E\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_13E00373-A70C-8146-C611-49A52D5DF225\">While 7482 (1994 PC1) is unlikely to be visible with the naked eye, amateur astronomers with a small telescope should be able to spot it, according to the website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/asteroid-1994-pc1-closest-jan-18-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EarthSky.com.<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F5DB0B5B-50E8-7661-A416-49A016AF720F\">In September this year, a NASA spacecraft will deliberately crash into an asteroid to change its motion in space &#8212; testing technology developed to deflect an asteroid hit.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F5DB0B5B-50E8-7661-A416-49A016AF720F\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_7B8000A7-B63D-BB5B-C7A3-49A018D6A2BF\">Known as the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/24\/world\/nasa-dart-asteroid-mission-launch-scn\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DART mission<\/a>, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, the spacecraft is aiming for Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_7B8000A7-B63D-BB5B-C7A3-49A018D6A2BF\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_35ED44F9-5510-6325-B6D2-49A1D2E4C17A\">Near-Earth objects are asteroids and comets with orbits that place them within 30 million miles (48 million kilometers) of Earth.
