Who Names\u00a0Hurricanes?<\/h3>\n

Hurricane season officially\u00a0begins on June 1 and ends on November 30 each year.\u00a0The lists of hurricane names for each season are chosen by the\u00a0World Meteorological Organization<\/a>\u00a0(not\u00a0The Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac<\/em>). There are six lists of names for Atlantic and Pacific storms, which are cycled through every six\u00a0years.<\/p>

The lists have been maintained since 1953 (originally by the\u00a0National Hurricane Center). For the\u00a02022\u00a0hurricane season, the list of names from 2016\u00a0is being used again, so don\u2019t be surprised if some sound familiar. Those that are not retired from the list\u00a0this year will be used again in the 2028\u00a0season.<\/p>\n

Hurricane Names for the 2022\u00a0Hurricane\u00a0Season<\/h3>\n

The lists below include storms in both the\u00a0Atlantic Basin<\/strong>\u00a0(Gulf and East Coast hurricanes) and\u00a0Eastern North-Pacific<\/strong>\u00a0(Pacific Island and West Coast\u00a0hurricanes).<\/p>

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Tropical storms are given names as soon as they display a rotating circulation pattern and wind speeds of 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour). A tropical storm develops into a\u00a0hurricane<\/strong>\u00a0when wind speeds reach 74 mph (119\u00a0kph).<\/p>\n

The traditional names listed above are in alphabetical order as the storms occur.\u00a0In other words, the first storm of the season will be given the first name on the list (starting with the letter A),\u00a0the\u00a0next will be given the name starting with B, and so on.\u00a0An average year, based on 1991 to 2020 data, will result in\u00a014 named storms, including seven hurricanes and three major\u00a0hurricanes.<\/p>

What Happens If We Run Out of\u00a0Names?<\/h3>\n

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season on record\u2014we ran through the entire alphabetical list of names (and then some)! This happens very rarely (it\u00a0has only happened once before, in 2005), but seems likely to become more common. What happens when it\u00a0does?<\/p>\n

If more storms occur in one season\u00a0than\u00a0there are names\u00a0on the list,\u00a0<\/strong>the newest storms have\u00a0traditionally been named after the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc.). However, starting in 2021, this was no longer the case. Instead of the Greek alphabet,\u00a0a list of supplemental names is used. Like names from the regular annual\u00a0lists,\u00a0supplemental names can be retired and replaced if the storms are deemed to be\u00a0significantly\u00a0impactful.<\/p>
