\u201cThere\u2019s been a huge fashion for Roman names and mythological names,\u201d said Pamela Redmond, the co-creator of Nameberry, a database and naming guide for expecting parents.<\/p>

Other moms and dads are taking inspiration from their favorite TV shows and celebrity offspring, while still others are taking things to surprising extremes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cHopefully, we\u2019re heading into a post-pandemic time that\u2019s more positive, and I think names will reflect people\u2019s desire for change and newness,\u201d said Redmond. \u201cNames are our symbol of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMany [parents] are introducing the ancient world as a source of new [to them] names that also have deep meaning,\u201d said Redmond.<\/p>\n

\"\"
The show \u201cBridgerton\u201d is resurging names like Daphne.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, shines as the 36th most-used name for American girls in 2020, up from 488th in 2000, according to the Social Security Administration.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Not far behind in the 2020 rankings, the most recent available, are the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, Athena (108); the Irish goddess and queen Maeve (173); and the Norse goddess of love, Freya (179).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

For boys, the punished-Greek titan Atlas (189), Athens-related Atticus (300) and the Greek hunter and solar constellation Orion (326) have soared in popularity over the past decade.<\/p>\n

But parents are only making so many historical connections with some of these names. Ophelia, on the rise and ranking 391 in 2020, has roots in Greek mythology and is the title of a 2016 song by the Lumineers. The name also belongs to the tragic, suicidal character in Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cHamlet,\u201d but some are disregarding that fact from high school English class.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of parents are choosing the name not really knowing about the story,\u201d Redmond said.<\/p>\n

Star-wattage<\/h2>\n

Luna \u2014 the name of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend\u2019s 5-year-old daughter \u2014 is currently the 14th most popular girl name in America.<\/p>\n

That name, which originated from the Roman goddess of the moon, has shot up 63 spots on the list since the celebrity babe\u2019s 2016 birth.<\/p>\n

Redmond expects similar surges for Mae (daughter of Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma), Cosmo (daughter of Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost) and Thunder and Saint Leo (the twin boys of Usain Bolt and Kasi Bennett).<\/p>\n

Biblical but not basic<\/h2>\n

Parents are opting for names from the holy book that aren\u2019t Daniel and David.<\/p>\n

Abel, which was ranked 352nd in 2000, is now the 181st most popular boy name \u2014 whereas his Old Testament brother (and killer) Cain is currently at 866.<\/p>\n

The name Saint, like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West\u2019s 6-year-old son Saint West, meanwhile, has jumped from 858 to 578 since 2018, when it was first recorded as a Top 1,000 name in the SSA. Creed had a similar leap: It first cracked the Top 1,000 in 2016 and is now ranked 796th.<\/p>\n

Biblical locations are also coming into style, Redmond said, anticipating surges for Jericho, Galilee, Nazareth and Canaan.<\/p>\n

Badass names<\/h2>\n

Harley \u2014 which Redmond said takes inspiration from both the DC antihero Harley Quinn and Harley-Davidson motorcycle brand \u2014 was the 291st most popular girl\u2019s name last year compared to being No. 485 in 2007.<\/p>\n

More macho names that are coming into play include Maverick (hello, Tom Cruise in \u201cTop Gun\u201d), Rowdy and Wilder. The latter ranks 431st after not even being in the Top 1,000 a decade ago.<\/p>\n

Strong-but-virtuous names, such as Justice and True, are also gaining steam, according to Redmond.<\/p>\n

TV baby names<\/h2>\n

The hit 2020 Netflix show \u201cBridgerton\u201d and its female protagonist are expected to make Daphne even more popular in the coming year. The name is currently ranked 415. Other names from the show, such as Benedict, could also see a boost.<\/p>\n

On the darker side of things, the popular show \u201cLucifer\u201d has spawned a trend of \u201cdemon naming,\u201d said Redmond.<\/p>\n

The expert has seen the likes of Lux, Jezebel and Lucifer itself become more trendy. In the United Kingdom, Lucifer was a more popular name than both Nigel and Trevor in 2020, according to the Standard.<\/p>\n

But, naming your kiddo after the devil has its risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least if you name your baby Daphne, you can always say, \u2018Oh, I liked it before \u201cBridgerton,\u201d \u2019 \u201d said Redmond. \u201cBut if you\u2019re naming your baby after a demon, there is little doubt where that came from.\u201d<\/p>\n
